Bike licence query. - Dek1985
I recently renewed the photo on my licence and was sent back a new card with a bike licence on it. I've never sat a bike test, but does this mean I can now legally use a bike.

There's 3 groups for mopeds (AM, P, Q) and 3 for motorbikes (A1, A2, A).

I believe that passing a car test entitles you to the Moped groups - and of course a licence will act as provisional for A1, the smallest motorbikes IF you passed your car test before Feb 2001 as no CBT is needed in that case.

It has been known that the DVLA have renewed licences that have had full motorcycle "A" category but failed to include it on the replacement licence requiring the unfortunate recipient to have to take a motorcycle test again-possibly they can screw up the other way round and issue an "A" category licence when no entitlement exists? Who knows?

I had the same thoughts when my licence was renewed after moving house recently, however, looking on the DVLA web site I discovered the codes after the symbol are very important and dictate what you can drive / ride. What looks like a motorbike actually means a tricycle in my case. This is under A category with the code 79(tri) afterwards. I would check the web site to be sure.
