Jaguar XF - suitable for a small island with no motorways - dan86

My parents are contemplating movine to warmer climates, Malta is the island in question.

My dad wants to take his car with him a 2014 Jaguar xf 3.0 diesel. The car has a dpf and he hasn't had any trouble with it and he doesn't do much motorway miles but he loves the car and wants to take it with him as it will be cheaper to import than buy out there.

Do you think this car is suitable the type of driving on this island witch doesn't have many if any fast roads?

Just inviting an expensive disaster.

Depending on what the DPF/MOT situation is like in Malta...rip the damn thing out and take it

Is there a Jaguar dealer? If not, then financial disaster looms..It breakss down, local muppet cannot fix it... no technical tools..

I would imagine Malta roads are rather narrow.. a Jaguar is ideally suited to banging sides on stone walls..

There is a Jag dealer in Malta. Get the dpf removed here, remapped and off they go. Or they could leave the car with immediate family (in case the move doesn't work) who could "look after it" and they buy a smaller more suitable car.

Well these blokes sell and service them in Malta, so don't worry about the old women's chorus above.

If he likes his car, tell him to take it with him. We don't have to be 100% sensible about everything in life anyway.

Malta is not the place to run any decent car you love. You need a car that you dont mind getting dinged and scratched. The standard of driving is so low, and the car on car knocks are so common. Its a completely different driving style, and not the kind of place to run a decent car. Get a knackered/cheap car you dont mind picking up minor damage. And the roads are pretty bad too, its not just the other drivers, the state of the roads is shocking.

Years since i've been there, but i'd want an old school tough 4x4 to run round in there, preferably fitted with an Aussie spec steel front bumper for the local hell drivers to bounce off.

Pot holes worse even than Northamptonshire, but maybe not quite as bad as Park Royal.

Thanks for the advice I did suggest he give me the jag and he get himself a old land cruiser but he wants to take it with him. The roads are better now not by much and from the last time I went 20 years ago to the trip we went on in July they seem to drive better now. I'll let him make his own mind up with the advice given.

I am told a top of the range. 1.3 Suzuki Jimny is the best car for malta

In England they drive on the left, in France they drive on the right, in Malta they drive in the shade.
