VW Passat 1.9 Tdi - Intermittent power loss. - dave3609

I have intermittent power loss which strangely is corrected by switching the ignition off then on again.

I have spoken to other owners who have the same problem. I have had the EGR replaced the Air mass meter also the ECR control valve. The issue remains. The car has done 145kmiles.

Other owners report the same on a Golf and a Passat and routinely carry out the switch off/ on to correct the issue over the past three years running.

What is causing this?

Sounds very much like the vanes in the VNT ( Variable Nozzle Turbo ) are carboned up ?

Have you ever had the error memory read on a diagnostic computer ? The usual code is P0234 Turbo/supercharger "A" over boost condition. It could have been caused by a faulty EGR valve or short journeys and / or low engine speeds.

There is a possibility of a sticky/seized vacuum actuator or holed diaphragm or split vac hose ? Best get it on a diag computer to check what code(s) are stored and take the appropriate action.

I had sticky vanes in my Seat Leon 1.9 TDI when I bought it 2 years ago and used this guide here : www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/un-sticking-your-tdi.../ to free them off. Never had it go into limp mode since but I suppose the way I drive it, as opposed to the previous owner, helps as it regularly gets driven in a 'spirited manner' so it burns off the soot/carbon and gives the actuator a workout too.

Totally agree with the above. Plugging into VCDS and going for a drive whilst monitoring live data will confirm an overboost problem. I have it and I'm in Hampshire if that helps you.
Innotec Turbo Clean is an excellent product for addressing this issue. I've used it many times and it's cured it every time. Read the instructions carefully before you do the job, and follow them exactly. Also make sure the engine is cold when you do it.
