Although I read reviews etc I would welcome the opinions of forum users.

The cups/mugs in particular are coming out of the dishwater not particularly clean. I am not aware of much than could go wrong with the machine - other than the motor failing. Would a change of tablet peerhaps help ? Has anyone experienced this and, if so, has a particular brand been an improvement ? Thanks

We use Finish powerball - the additional cost over other/won-market brands is minimal, especially as the Finish ones occasionally are on special offer. We did use another brand previously, but found far better cleaning with Finish.

Any idea on your water hardness ? Do you use a softener ? Do you use rinse aid salt ?

I'd add, are you sure the spray arms are clear of blockages?

I find no difference between different brands, I usually go for the supermarket own brand/cheapest.

I avoid the expensive stuff that claim to have water softening and rinse aid built in. Find out how a dishwasher works and you'll soon realise what t*** it is.

Thanks for taking the time to post such helpful replies. I've got some things to work at now.

We buy whatever Makro have on offer. Usually Finish or Fairy at about 10p per tablet and due to the size of ten boxes we end up with enough for a couple of years.

We also run it empty 3 or 4 times a year on highest setting with a dishwasher cleaner fluid. About £1 from Aldi for a double pack. Dishwasher is now almost 10 years old and no problems.

I'm sure i remember Lidls and Aldis own brands winning the Which award for best buy, i reckon they clean as well as and for about half the price of Finish's ones made of unobtainium.

In fact i haven't found a single WG labelled cleaning product from Lidl to be anything other than superb and very well priced compared to the usual suspects.

'Flash' dishwasher tabs were on less than half price at Morrisons some time ago and, as usual, i stocked up, well they do clean the dishes and pans but NBG for getting the tea stains off the cups and once we've used 'em i wouldn't buy them again.

Have you found the dishwasher tablets to be damp recently? I only use a half one and find they no longer snap in half, but crumble instead.

Don't know, still using up the mountain of Fairy tabs (not Flash as i wrongly wrote above) i bought when on cheap as chips offer...yes i know possibly another OCD of many, but we do the same whenever things we use regularly are cheap, only finished earlier this year the Ariel washing machine tabs we bought at well below half price before we moved house some 12 years ago...:-)

I take Paracetamol if it needs emptying before i can fill it, or a valium if its not even been turned on since it was last filled!

Good advice above about making sure the nozzles are clear.

We use Fairy 'all-in-one' tablets which are squishy rather than hard like the Finish tablets. Admittedly this was a few years ago, but we found that over time the glaze on the china was rubbed away by the Finish tablets: this hasn't happened since we used Fairy.

Many thanks again everyone for all the very useful advice. Excellent forum. Hopefully a new dishwasher now many years away !

Aldi's standard tablets are pretty good. They also do a powder, available when dishwasher stuff is the 'special', which is just as good and even more economical.

I'd endorse other's suggestions to clean the thing with proprietary cleaner/descaler and check the arms carefully for obstructions in their spray outlets. Also, make sure they are being fed with water and rotating correctly. Our old Bosch alternated the supply between upper and lower arms at some parts of the cycle. The electro valve that facilitated the swapping function failed with result that stuff in top basket did not come clean.

If the upper basket has raised/lowered positions it's worth swapping between them to see if that makes a difference.

Finally, is it a particular type of cup that's not coming clean? Mrs B has one china mug that stains badly with tea. It's a peculiarity of the mug rather than dishwasher and it needs an occasional soak in homebrew steriliser to keep it looking OK.

We use dishwasher powder, not tablets, which means you can vary the amount according to the dishwasher load and you are not restricted to using one tablet per wash.

Simples!
