mercedes sprinter - high temperature? - submarine

Hiya. My van normally runs a a very consistent low temp of 40. Its just bin to the garage re renewing the anti-freeze, they said the thermometer was stuck closed, which they replaced & few other bits & said something they did would make it run a bit hotter quicker. Now its on a consisent 85 degrees. They say this is fine (as is anything up to 90 or 100), but i know this is hot for my usually cool running engine & another mechanic says running it at 85 all the time will damage it & sounds like an air-lock in the water. Which mechanic is right? Any informed advice welcome! Thankyou!

A diesel running at 40 C is far too cold and will risk engine damage in the long term, you say that the garage reported that the thermostat was stuck closed - I think that should read "stuck open".

The indicated consistent 85 C sounds about right, - if there was an airlock the temperature wouldn't be consistent.

85 sounds about right for an MB, not as i've had much to do with Sprinters but its probably running an E300 or similar Diesel, so long as its a consistent temp it should be fine.

40 was far too low anyway.

Use the heater for a few days and keep an eye on the water level to be sure all the ait is out...no gurgling noises from the heaater matrix or anything?

Running any engine at 40 degrees will cause premature wear. All recent engines I have owned have run between 85 and 90 degrees (according to the gauge which is not necessarily calibrated accurately). It will not cause any problems, they are designed to work like that.

The actual running temp is regulated by the thermostat. What is the temp rating of the one in your van, Merc should be able to tell you.

Hi I know it’s been a long time since you had van repaired but if you don’t mind telling what they did to fix the problem In the beginning when the temp was staying at 40 as mine is doing the same and I would like my sprinter to run at around 90degrees. I have had water pump changed and replaced thermostat and radiator. Or if you can tell me where you got the van repaired. Thank you very much. Or if someone cam help please. Thanks
In advance
