Returning a SORN'd car to UK - expatnl

I have a car in Europe I need to get back to the UK.

It is not being used and is SORNd with no mot but is insured

My understanding is that I can take it on the ferry home and drive home if I am booked into an MOT. Does anyone know if this is correct? Does it matter how far the MOT station is from the ferry port as long as I am going 'direct'?

I figure I will probably get stopped via ANPR activation with both cars....

I understand that for the car that is SORN'd the SORN is not valid as it is not in the UK...bit late for that...

I will try and ask the police next week what the deal is but would be interested to hear views from here. I think I asked the DVLA or VOSA before and I think the view was as I described above.

I am most worried about the SORN'd car returning as I know if i get in trouble for that if what I describe above is not correct. I know I have committed an offense by SORN'ing a vehicle which is not in the UK - very stupid of me I know.

Thanks
Jake

Had a friend who was living in Spain who returned to the UK last year driving his UK registered vehicle.

He had not registered any SORN he took the car out of the UK on purchase, and I'm not entirely sure whether he ever registered it in his name.

He had insurance valid Spain & UK, (which I advised him to carry on his person) he drove back to the UK then booked it in for an MOT & taxed it - there was no comeback

He undoubtably was in breech of Spanish driveing/registration legislation, but they are somewhat lax over there.

PS The police are unlikely to help other than saying you must have valid insurance & an MOT & directing you to Vehicle Licensing

Under Vehicle Excise Act and Motor Vehicles (Test)Regs you are permitted to drive a motor vehicle on a road without Excise Licence or Test Certificate providing it is proceeding to a pre booked Test Centre. The law does not specify a restriction on distance nor is there any case law on this. Obviously driving from Southhampton to Glasgow would raise eyebrows.

Once tested then presume he will the necesssary excise duty (no Licence will be issued after 1.10.140 which will nulify any need to sorn. If he wants to be absolutely fool proof sorn it onb line. Simples..

As to possible problems regarding import check with Customs and Excise.

DVD - Thank you for the reply.

To clarify, my biggest worry is that I HAVE ALREADY SORN'd the car and thus I am worried I will be in trouble for bringing it into the country as it is an offence.

Second possible issue is 6 points and fine for no tax and asked to pay for the year and a bit I have not been in the country.

When you say call customs and exise, do you mean VOSA?

I have a quote from shiply to transport it to London for around 600....seems to be the safest way...

Thank you for the reply - it seems that not everyone is picked up the minute they enter the UK. How long ago was this?

I understand the tax cameras are getting very good in the UK but unless they catch me immediately I would be free to drive it to a very close by MOT station...
