Audi A4 - Stop light bulbs keep blowing - Steveieb

My Audi A4 2003 saloon has started to blow bulbs on a monthly basis.

When I change the bulb(double fillament) the dashboard indicator continues to display "Stop bulb left side" until I have driven a short distance and used the brakes a couple of times.

Audi say there is no difference in the bulbs whether from Ring, Bosch or Hella, but I am baffled why this keeps happening.

Can anyone give me an explanation and possible cure?

Check the voltage on the battery with the engine running - may be over charging / over voltage

Also are the bulb holders well attached - if a bit of plastic has broken off alowing them to vibrate/wobble then this would cause rapid bulb failure.

Buy Philips or Osram bulbs or get them from main dealer .You won,t buy these from car parts shops or big sheds.

We had this with a Mitsubishi Spacewagon. Once I bought better quality bulbs from known brands and not generic ones from Halfords, the problem went away.

Big John, Elekie and Blue have given you the correct advise -- If you're buying the same make (or un-named) bulb from the same shop, then they're selling you a poor quality bulb. I had that with 5w capless sidelight bulbs many years ago from a well-known chain of car parts shops.. After just a few days, the bulbs went black and blew (as they say), and with the glass blackening, that showed that there was air inside them. That chain must have had other complaints, because they now sell a very good quality, long lasting sidelight bulb. If a bulb blows due to over-voltage and blows like a fuse, then the glass should normally not be blackened by that.

You can't beat buying quality in things like this.

Years ago when i drove artic tippers, on steel springs for added pounding, the standard bulbs we used were Lucas, they lasted ages.

Then one day a rep from one of the companies in the OP came calling, special offers galore, my boss bought trays of their bulbs they were so cheap, thousands.

Just as well he bought boxes of them as we fitted them by the dozen every day, running empty from Widnes across to the Notts coalfields (remember them?) on a wet day with lights on, on average 6 out of the 8 new make side light bulbs fitted to a trailer would blow due to the 2 hours of hard vibration...when we fitted these new quality bulbs they'd often fizzle out as we fitted them, absolute useless for our job.

The company i work for now still buy Lucas bulbs, they still work well.

I've been buying the odd multi pack of Lucas or Osram for my own stock at home online, you struggle to find good bulbs at accessory shops, either go online (take care, fakes) or visit a proper motor factor, preferably one who sells lorry/trailer parts.

I would concur, there are normally only two things that will cause bulbs to fail and the most likely one is vibration and how long they last depends on how well made they are, the other is over voltage which is unlikely as other bulbs would be failing as well, connect a voltmeter across the battery with the engine running, it should read about 14.4 volts.
