New Nissan Pulsar - boring - Snakey

I suppose its the Auris equivalent.

Best described as 'a car'

Probably will be bought by people with no interest in cars but who need one.

Or people that want a decent car that should be reliable.

I've got what many would class as a 'boring' car - a Hyundai i10 but that doesn't mean I don't have an interest in cars.

Its going to have to compete against several top notch cars in that class e.g. Focus, Golf, Leon etc and even if its brilliant I am sorry to say its going to struggle.

Think back to the Almera. Nissan introduced it in the early/mid 90's to compete against the Escort (which was rubbish), the Astra (which was little better) and the Peugeot 306 (which was superb but unreliable). All the magazines said it was a match for the 306 with a promise of better reliability.

Dad bought one early in 1997. Got a huge discount off a pre-reg since Nissan (as expected) was struggling to shift them off the forecourts. It was great to drive and ride in and in the seven years he had it the only parts replaced were 4 front tyres (as expected), a door lock barrel (under warranty) and a leaking rear wheel cylinder. When it was 7 years old he still got an excellent PX price because the dealer knew that they were exceptionally reliable.

Back end looks odd, apart from that it looks OK, interior much in the mould of VW understated or boring depending on point of view. I'd be happy if I turned up at car hire location and got one of these - apart from image the only differentiator in the segment seems to be with Ford giving their cars real flair in ride/handling balance but if this is not your priority then it's probably as good as anything else.

Will it be spacious or will it be cramped like the focus?

90% of all cars look like that now?

One thing you usually find with a new Nissan is there great to drive and don't break down.

Thats why i've had more Nissans than any other make.

As Skidpan says, it's entering a hotly-contested segment - alng with superminis probably the most hotly-contested - and it needs to have a USP in order to succeed. I'm not sure what that is, if indeed it has one.

HJ "The Pulsar is incredibly quiet and smooth, making it one of the most relaxed hatchbacks around. There's little in the way of sparkle from behind the wheel, but it's very comfortable with superb ride quality. It's a car that's effortless to drive and fuss-free to own. It also has acres of rear legroom - more than larger saloons like the BMW 3 Series."

Exactly what many people want, even though it only gets a rating of three.
