Can another driver insist I claim on insurance - Paul25

I hit a parked car while reversing. The damage to the parked car is minor, a couple of scratches and a very small dent. The owner of the other vehicle is asking I contact my insurance company to make a claim. Can he insist I do this? I suspect it would be cheaper to settle the matter privately with him.

You had a bump, he knows your car reg no.

You are required to give the 3rd party the name of your insurer.

For a fee he can get your insurer details or report the matter to his own insurer who will contact your insurer.....either way you have to tell him or he will find out anyway.

Your own insurer will not be happy if you had a bump and did not tell them!.

I've already given him my insurance details, but my insurer won't deal directly with a 3rd party. He wants me to go to my insurer direct but since I have a £500 excess, they may not pay out anyway. I've asked him to get a quote for the repair so we could perhaps settle it privately but he insists I should contact my insurance company.

You don't have to make a claim for your own damage but you do need to notify your insurer of the accident who will then deal with the 3rd party.

Your excess only applies to damage to your car.

Even if you don't claim but the other guy does, you'll have any NCD reduced.

You report the accident to your insurer. Until you do this they cannot deal with the 3rd party because they are not aware of the accident.

But not all companies will work like that. If they won't he will have to claim off his own insurance if he won't settle it privately.

You will only have to pay excess on repairing your damage and not the 3rd parties so don't worry about that.

Thanks to all. I've reported it to my insurer now and asked them to inform me once the claim is processed. I can reimburse them if I want to avoid losing my NCD which may or may not be worthwhile.

Can another driver insist I claim on insurance - thunderbird

Many years ago I had an incident where a car turned across the front of me, no way of avoiding it. Plenty of witnesses and the driver agreed to pay. So I went along with it but no money. Chased up for several weeks but no still no money. Then the local free paper dropped on the doorstep, reading through it I immediately spotted the persons name in one of the headlines. They had been jailed the day before for several offences.

I presume that they had no insurance and clearly had no intention of paying. Just strung me along to avoid another charge in court.

By this time it was probably 2 months after the initial incident and my insurers did not want to know.

Would I do the same good turn again, no way. Get all the other parties details and get a claim put in. Let the insurers sort it. That is what you pay them for.

In a previous life more people were honourable, well at least in my experience, and such a minor event would have been sorted amicably between the two parties.

This does still happen, SWMBO had a minor altercation in a car park, she apologised and asked the senior chap who she hit to get a quote and she'd pay up privately, he seemed unsure (no doubt worried Thunderbirds type of scenario would play out) but a reasonable quote turned up for IIRC about £220 and she sent a cheque by return of post.

The letter of thanks from the chap, who didn't know SWM from a bar of soap, but took a chance, was quite moving.

In about 1983 I was hit at a junction from behind. Minimal damage. Chap was local and keen to sort without insurance. I got a price to fix it from a local garage, think it was about £70 for a new bumper and a bit of metal bashing and paint. Phoned him and the following day he dropped the cash off.

Move onto about 1998. Wife had just received a call saying her mother was in hospital with a suspected heart attack. At some temporary lights the van in front decided to reverse back since he had overshot the sign, He apologised saying he was "sorry luv, on the f***ing phone" he had never looked if anyone was behind. Car needed new bumper, paint and number plate. His employers were keen to settle without insurance (no damage to van) but it took 6 months of phone calls, letters etc.

Would I do it again, no way.
