vauxhall corsa 1.7 Cdti ecoflex sri vs 1.3 version - Best for fuel efficiency diesel corsa - stacys1

  • I am looking to buy a new or fairly new corsa. Changing from a 1.2 petrol 2008 design to diesel. I drive mainly motorway and also some local and cover 350 miles per week. A monthly petrol spend is around £280. Confused about which is better for mpg the 1.3 or the 1.7?

I drive an 07 1.3 cdti 95hp for my 92 mile round trip to work. Fuel economy on supermarket fuel ranges from 48-52mpg. On bp ultimate it is between 52-56mpg. These are calculated figures not from the cars trip computer.

If I was buying again I would be tempted to look at a 1.7. The 1.3 lacks oomph which after a while starts to grate. It drives noticeably better on bp ultimate as opposed to supermarket fuel but is still not what you d call a rocket ship!.

The 6 speed gearbox means it cruises at 70 at 2200 rpm which is fairly relaxed. I ve taken mine from 38k to 97k with no real troubles (touch wood). I do over service it though. Oil and filter every 10k and service every 20k. I'm starting to think about changing it at the moment and having done some sums the difference between petrol and diesel is not what it used to be. It's worth working out for your commute. As always generally the most expensive option is to buy a new car.

The difference between the 1.3 vs the 1.7 in the real world will be neglible, you'll probably drive the 1.3 harder to make it go thus using more fuel.

The 1.7 CDTi is generally regarded as a very reliable engine, although its fairly long in the tooth now having been around as the Isuzu engine from the mid-90s now with Common Rail tech bolted on.

I had the old 1.7 DTi which was the precursor to the current motor, I used to get around 60-65mpg on a run sometimes!

Remember though its not just fuel costs you need to consider, think about repairs. You'll have a DMF and a DPF on either of those cars which may need replacing at some point. You've then got a turbo and EGRs that may go wrong. Factor those costs in too or atleast save the money in a bank account that you're not paying on fuel, just in case.

I ve never driven a 1.7 cdti but I believe it's 135hp. In a car the size of a corsa I would have thought it would have some go in it. That said that extra torque would place more strain on things like the flywheel.

If you are doing 350 miles a week over the year you are covering 18200 miles.

With petrol costing circa £1.30 a litre the above works out at an average mpg of 32mpg, which means you are getting 65% of the offical combined figure. I would hope to at leat get 40mpg from this type of journeys, so I would check that the car is running correctly tyres inflated to the recommeded pressure, drive to save fuel.

As at 40mpg you will be saving £60.00 a month on fuel :)

Based on that the best for efficiancy would be a different driver :-)

SWMBO drove both versions in Corsa vans, she loved the 1.7, went like hell and effortlessly, but found the 1.3 gutless needing constant thrashing and higher revs hence no better or worse on fuel than the larger engine.

I found the same even delivering them, the small engine lacking low rev torque.

To be fair thats been my experience of Diesels since i started driving them 40 odd years ago, the bigger engines have always ended up just as good on fuel due to easy running...but if you make constant use of the extra oomph by driving the larger engined model faster they will use more fuel.
