Tyres/wheels stood in water - brum

My daughter lives in Aberdeen, where parking a car is a nightmare. Today she phoned to ask if it's OK if tyres are parked in water. Apparently the only spot she could find meant that one side of the car was parked in a "few inches of water". Just over the bottom of the rims ,when I enquired further. I told her that she should move it after a day or two - but she's scared to move it because of the problem of finding another spot. She only uses the car at weekends because of this nightmare. Hopefully the water will subside if it stops raining for long enough.

What's your opinion of adverse effects of tyre submersion in street water for prolonged periods? Two tyres are 5yr old Bridgestoness, the other are new Vredestein all season tyres.

I don't think the tyres will come to too much harm so long as the water is clean, uncontaminated by oils or other chemicals, and the tyres are in perfect condition.

I don't think this will be good for the wheels though, possibility of at least a certain amount of salt in the water, especially during the winter period, this is bound to seep into the wheel and corrode the bead seals, if it gets higher it may damage bearings brakes etc.

Constant wet under the car will cause premature corrosion of the suspension running gear and subframe and eventually get into the body frame too.

Not a place i would be parking, bit better for her if she bought a big old 4x4 on 16" wheels with 70 or 80 aspect tyres, water would have to be at least 6" deep to reach the wheel.

Haven't touched on the health aspect, its not a car i'd want to be working on, could be all sorts of nasties in that water.

Second all that. How about finding an old plank or something to park on in the water?

Its in a public street, once she moves it, that spot will be gone in under 5 minutes and she'll find another, albeit it may take half an hours driving....

Fortunately the rims are alloys so corrosion should be less of an issue, though I did tell her to never park with suspension parts or disks/drums submerged. They rust fast enough as it is. Next time she's back home, I think a heavy session of plastic/tyre cleaner on the sidewalls is in order - its good at waterproofing judging by the water beading I see when I wash the cars.

Forget the water issue. Get her to replace the two 5 year old bridgestone immediately. Mixing all season and normal tyres is a recipe for severe handling imbalance in an emergency situation. Presuming the new tyres are on the front she will potentially end up going off the road backwards hopefully without hitting another car. Her insurers would probably use the fact that the tyres don't match as a way to avoid paying.

Second that.

There's a chump on another thread thinks it's ok to mix tyre types. It is not.

Get another pair of the Vredesteins so all four are the same.

Oh please.

Do give the scare mongering a miss.
