Hi All,

I'm looking to replace a Toyota Auris 2.0 d4d that is ageing terribly at under 100k and 5 ish years. After a catolouge of faults it's returned from Toyota today after it's major service with a bill for £800 general repairs and investigation to identify a serious fluid leak coming from the block or potentially the gearbox, they are not sure of the exact location at the moment. I am a supermarket store manager and my mileage can fluctuate wildly, on average I do around 20-23k but can hit 35k per year. I always use main dealers for servicing, so a good value menu serving scheme would be an advantage. (My car has a full Toyota history)

I'm not sure I want another diesel as I only average 44mpg over my ownership on my 40 mile each way motorway return. In addition each of my diesel cars have had major breakdowns (diesel related) that have cost a fortune to put right. ( negating any fuel saving and more) My wife has a fiesta ecoboost that is fantastic and I can manage 50-55 mpg on my commute but will cost more than I'm willing to spend.

My main requirements are a car under 4 years old that has 5 doors, air con, ESP, a full array of airbags and a reasonable boot. This car will suffer dents etc due to parking arrangements in loading bays so looks not too important. It needs to be more comfortable than the Auris (can't be hard) and return 45 mpg at least. I have a budget of between £7-8k. Can be manual or auto. I was thinking civic 1.8. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Can you not get a Fiesta or Focus Ecoboost for under £8k? They've made these for a few years now.

If not the Civic is certainly worth looking at. Make sure you can live with the appalling rear visibility: I couldn't, but several people have said on here that they can.

I'd have suggested a Volvo S40 / V50, but it seems that most used Volvos on the market are diesels. The Ford and Peugeot diesel units that Volvo have used are better than some, so you could bear them in mind.

Or there's the Skoda Octavia: lots of room and cheaper than a Golf of the same vintage. There used to be a 1.8 and the 1.9 diesel is more durable than the 2.0 PD (up to 2009). The SEAT Leon and Altea were also available with the 1.9 TDI: I can't remember what petrol engines they came with in the age range that you're looking for, but you can look at the car-by-car reviews on this site.

(Edit: you could also read Skidpan's thoughts on the Kia Ceed on the thread titled 'Help' - I'd only add that you could also consider a petrol Ceed.)

I thought the Civic had more than firm suspension, if I remember its reviews correctly.

You've done well to get 55mpg out of the Ecoboost Fiesta all the reviews I've read rate it very highly but they all struggle to get 40mpg.

Cargiant have a 2011 Kia Ceed 1.6 auto with 6k miles on it for £6800. So 94k miles and 3 to 4 years more warranty on it.

As much as I rate Kia's a 1.6 auto ptrol is not a good idea. Expect no more than 30 mpg and poor flexibility and performance.

At that mileage/age I would check very very very carefully that it has been serviced correctly. The petrol requirement is 1 year or 12,500 miles and many low mileage customers simply don't bother. Unless its been done to the letter with receipts to prove it (a Kia requirement - service books stamps are not enough) the car will have no warranty at all.

He means surely that with a mileage of 6,000 there are 94,000 miles left on the warranty.

But Skidpan is certainly right in saying that you won't get 45 mpg out of this particular Kia.

Most petrol autos will struggle to give 45mpg on journeys that predominantly involve motorway miles. My wifes Kia Picanto 1.1 auto used to give 38mpg on a mixed commute yet Kia reckoned 55mpg. Diesel manual, tall sixth gear for that kind of stuff.

I can recommend a Jaguar S-Type which goes for a thoroughly reasonable fee these days.

Slightly left field suggestion, but can't you get a Prius for that sort of money now? If reliable commuter vehicle (especially if town dwelling) is your bag, could be worth a look.

I think Avant's suggestion of checking out Skidpans post is a good one. A kia C'eed or Hyundai i30 with a decent bit of warranty left would give piece of mind. As per Skidpans post, if you buy slightly older you'd get a diesel without DPF or DMF and the warranty would presumably cover other potential diesel pitfalls, such as a blown turbo, fuel pump/injector problems or a failed EGR.

I'd also consider a Skoda with the 1.9 Tdi PD lump (Fabia, Octavia or Superb, depending how much space you need).

Skoda, Hyundai, Kia... When did these suddunly become cool cars?

They didn't.

They're not.

Who said they were cool cars?

Cars that keep going for donkeys years, long after they are paid for and cease to depreciate are very cool cars indeed....see the great and good money lenders of Gerrards Cross and Wokingham type residences crying in their champers (and their trophy wives sulking) when no one's paying for their exhorbitant lifestyle via interest payments...thats really cool...:-)

Anyone say they are, ought to be down right ashamed of themselves.

I agree with gordonbennet's view above. Anyone who worries about whether their car is 'cool' hasn't grown up into a sensible adult, in my personal opinion.
