BMW - Manufacturers taking note ? - RobJP

Interestingly, BMW in the USA have changed the recommended oil change intervals, no idea if they're doing so for other markets. The oil change is going to 10k miles.

Undoubtedly, they'd deny it had anything to do with the poor publicity they've had over the years, and all the timing chain problems, but a decent step, all the same, and here's hoping they bring it to all the other markets too !

They need to bring most diesels down to about half the present interval, this would reduce turbo failure rate to a fraction of the present level.

Its pretty irrelevant to the rest of the world. On most US cars the oil change interval is still 6000 miles since manufacturers only spec a basic mineral oil.

The wifes Kia is service every year or 20,000 miles using full synthetic, same car in the US is service every 6,000 miles using vasic oil.

If US BMW dealers (and independants) have been using a basic mineral oil then failures will have been at epidemic proportions. BMW probably realise its impossible to educate the Americans that high quality oil is needed so have shortened the interval in the hope it makes things better.
