My grandson suffered a blown headgasket on his Renault Espace that required the RAC to recover the car. They gave him a Skoda Citigo hire car to get him home. Next morning it was left outside the house opposite theirs and I was asked to move it to their house for collection after the family had gone to work in their own cars. I have well over 50 years experience in driving but I couldn't start that car though I tried all the usual things. Eventually, with my wife steering I pushed it across the avenue and almost into place. The avenue is on a slight hill and I was having to really strain to make headway. When I had almost got the car in place a roofer, who had been reroofing a house down the avenue, and thus with an 'overall view', kindly climbed down, came up the avenue and told me to push in both the brake and clutch pedals before turning the ignition key. Thank you, kind sir !

Hehe, someone at Work has a new Mercedes and I couldn't get that into D.
The selector was hidden above the wiper stalk but didn't look like a shifter it was very small and I was preoccupied with this on the centre console...

Maybe the makers are introducing 'security through obscurity'?

A few years ago I had an A4 courtesy car which I couldn't start. Called the hire company and because the steering lock hadn't been activated after they left it with me no start was possible. I had to take the key out, lock the steering and then reinsert key.

Now that I think of it, when I start an older unfamiliar car I always have the handbrake on. press the footbrake and clutch pedals to be sure it won't jump before I turn the ignition key. I'm getting forgetful through driving an auto for so long.

Additionally, when starting big engines on cold winter's mornings in yesteryear the starter motor was fighting against gearbox oil the consistency of treacle. It made the engine starting process easier if the clutch pedal is pressed in.

I have always done this, as whether the oil is like treacle or water, it always means a bit less work for the starter motor. And it prevents any embarrassment if the car has been left in gear ...

How odd. I have a VW Up, which is almost identical. I turn the key and it starts. No need to declutch or brake. No need for a red face.

Very odd - I have a Citigo in our household. No need to depress brake/clutch to start the engine. Best practice dictate we start by depressing the clutch, but the engine will start whether we do this or not.
