It's possible it's a key problem. Keys are usually coded to the car but thay can go 'bad', happened with my son's Panda - the first key was erratic for a while and now will no longer start the car. If you just get a new key cut but not coded, it won't work.
Your experience suggests that you have a coded second key but it's not reading properly.
Probably a good idea to get a new key made and coded, unless you can manage with one - but better to have a back up anyway (as I tried to persuade my son).
It's probably reasonable to suggest that they should have supplied you with two keys that work, but they might not agree with what is probably a cheap older car - lots of second hand cars for are missing the spare key altogether I should think.
