Anyone had their DPF removed? Instant MOT failure now apparently.

Just read the same today in current Which magazine. Think its going to cost some people a lot of money.

The next car I buy will be a petrol.

My DPF is currently on the garage floor awaiting refitting when I can get the correct parts to refit it, just the little take off pipe for the pressure sensor cost over £12.

It all comes down to "how will the tester know that the dpf has been removed?"

You can remove the whole case and replace with a straight through pipe, or on some, take the filter off, whack a large masonry bit through the matrix and de-programme the ecu.

Stick the lot back on and who's the wiser?

You can get aftermarket DPF with slightly bigger holes or whatever those things are for lower prices than the normal ones. I understand thoose ones don't block as often so theoretically they should be good. I think...

I suspect cleverly done, ie by welding extra metal inside the canister to give it a more solid feel/sound when tapped, that a well done de-DPF would fool most MOT testers, whether the tester would be in the least bothered about searching for empty DPF pods anyway i'm unsure.

The tester won't have time or the equipment to link into the computer and interrogate it for ECU DPF delete, so how is he to know if he was at all bothered.

It may not be right and some people get on their high horse about the practice, but i can understand why people go down this road.

People have been de-catting between MOT tests for some time with various petrol engined cars.

The ironic part is, I have a DPF on my van and it costs me more in road tax than a previous model without it, due to the DVLA's banding system of not recognising Euro 4 or 5 between 2006 and 2009.

Soo much for lower polution equalling cheaper VED rates.

My daughter's A3 2.0 Tdi 170 started to have DPF failure at 55K.

Main dealer quoted £1800 for full replacement. But after much persuation managed a forced regeneration.

She has sold the car and bought a BMW 320D which HJ reckons does not suffer from these problems.

Since we went over to diesel cars we've never had an MOT failure on emissions. When we had petrol cars emissions was one of the main failure points on our cars.

Ah, but tampering with the DPF would probably affect the particlate emissions, so you'd be no better off.

The mot test for the dpf is a visual inspection only.If the dpf has obviously been removed, then the car will fail. The current emissions test for a diesel is not able to detect the presence of a dpf or not.Btw ,the next challenge is for gpf systems that will be fitted to petrol engined cars in the future.(gasoline particulate filters)

Just had mine done at the dealership and it passed. Why?
Because it is still there but the filter medium was removed.
It doesn't smoke at all anyway due to Bluemotion Euro 5.

Just seen in the local paper a garage which does MOTs and will also remove DPFs. One way to ensure return customers each year for their MOTs!

Presumably they will remove them in such a way that they can't detect that they have done it ;)

Nicely phrased MT, the left hand not knowing what the right is doing.

All - DPF Removal - Wackyracer

They don't actually have a means to test the DPF, They only look for it physically.

So provided it 'appears' to be fitted and can pass the smoke test, It will pass the MOT.

Ironically my car that was never fitted with a DPF has a lower VED rate than my car fitted with a DPF.

Ironically my car that was never fitted with a DPF has a lower VED rate than my car fitted with a DPF.

VED is based on the CO2 figure. A DPF removes particles, it has nothing whatsoever to do with CO2. Thus having a DPF will not reduce your VED.

Yes, The one fitted with a DPF has lower CO2 but, As it is classed as an LCV and was registered between december 2006 and january 2009 I get charged for a Non Euro compliant engine. Even though it is at least Euro 4.
