Toyota RAV4 - Toyota rav 4 t180 run flat tyres problem - aizberg

Hello,

So I got Toyota rav 4 2006 t180, which is high spec, with flatrun tyres (235 55 r18).Surprisingly it seems to be a problem to have flatrun tyres. Today Ive got puncture on one of my tyres and unfortunetely none of toyota branch is able to change the tyre, because lack of equipment. We spent about two hours in the toyota branch and they are unable to find any branch in the uk to change flat run tyre. After long discussion in the branch the advisors unable o find any solution, suggesting me to call all toyota branches to find out if they have facilities to change the tyre.

After such of expierence I've realised the flat run tyres is useless as its dificult to change it. After spending hours of research i found Watling tyres in tunbridge is able to change my flat run tyres for 50£ for each tyre. I was thinking about to fit general tyres. There few options which I personally consider and looking for expierenced advise.

Option 1

Change run flat tyre to normal one. (One question arises, if my tyre pressure sensor will be in working order, or I have error on the dashboard?)

option 2

Change new wheels with run flat tyres from the same model of the car (question is, due to changing new wheels, Ive presume my tyre pressure sensor wont be working. Do I need reprogramming the software, where it can be done, rougly price?)

option 3

Upgrade with new wheels of 235 55 r17, as other toyota rav 4 is driving similar size tyres.( hovever the branch wont recommend to change it as of my car specification, and once again question about the tyre pressure sensor, is it pass mot ?)

Please advise any other ideas and solutions are appreciated.

I have had run flats on 2 cars in the past, a BMW and Mini and when needed my local Indy never had an issue taking off/fitting a tyre at the normal rate. He was also able to repair a puncture in the tyres providing that the repair was in the permitted area and I confirmed that the tyre had not actually been run flat, if it had it was scrap.

So find a place that knows waht they are talking about, clearly the Toyota dealer is clueless.

With regards to fitting non runflats my BMW winter tyres were and the TPS still functioned normally. But your insurers need to be told and there may be an additional premium to pay.

And dropping to 17" wheels with the same profile and width as the 18"'s is not an option. It will lower the car, affect the handling and also affect the accuracy of the speedo. Your insurers will not permit such a mod and it will probably affect your warranty as well.

We also come across about bmw run flat tyres discussion at the branch. It seems that bmw have different technology of overall tyres and it can be changed at the any garage, however toyota run flat tyres is completely different made. Ive just curious how other consumers able to fix the puncture or change tyre if toyota unable to provide comprehensive tyre service. Im still thinking about option one....

Owned my Rav4 T180 from day 1 (brand new Oct 2006) and never had a problem with the run flat tyres, (until now 2014)

First puncture in 2007, Toyota dealer damaged the inner band and tried to charge me for it! Questioning this with Bridgestone, got a refund and knowledge who in my local area were equipped to change my tyres. Thus did have punctures repaired and the tyre kept for me, for when I needed a new tyre

Reverting now, Oct 2014 to a non run flat system, due to a fault with the ECU sensor. Advice is, it could cost £1,00's to trace/fix, so disable it, as a warning light on the dash is a MOT failure!

So will disable the engine senor and replace the tyres as and when they need replacing.

Actuallty daunted at the thought of having to check my tyre pressures again after 8 years of not!

My toyota dealer is generally excellent, but useless when it comes to tyres. They told me the 1000 mile winter tyre my wife had punctured was a write off. Local (respected) tyre dealer said no problem/

There's a lucrative business selling repaired tyres to these second hand tyre places. I wonder what their source is......................................................?

I'd suggest checking the wheel and tyre options for other cars of a similar spec in the brochure for your car ... see what toyota offer / reccomend as these may well fit your car - especially if offered for your exact model. check if the brakes and body fittings in the wheel arch area are the same, you don't want to be fitting something that fouls when turning etc.

Whatever you do make sure your insurance company is aware .. you don't want to give them an excuse to avoid a claim if such event should occur (or be prosecuted for driving without insurance if cover was to be recinded)

If you convert to ordinary tyres the TPMS will give an error which is an MOT fail. It can be switched off.

Sadly the MOT regs now state that tyre pressure warning systems fitted as standard must be operational. I was an inch away from buy a new RAV4 T180 as a second car - but noticed the standard run-flats and decided against it for this reason alone. If there is a way of fitting standard wheels and tyres whilst keeping the tyre pressure warning system happy then that's certainly the way I'd go.

Ive just changed the tyres to ordinary one at the asf tyres ltd. And happy to say they changed tyres in couple hours with no damage to pressure sensors. All in working order, so no need to worry anymore.

I bought 4 Goodyear run flats for my 520D from ATS. One got a nail in the middle of the tread and I went back to ATS. They told me they do not repair runflats under any circumstances.

I went to CTS in Derby who repaired the tyre without a problem, I asked them whether it was legal, they said yes. I know where I'll be getting my next set.

So it was a straight replacement with the same size standard tyres? Perhaps the T180 RAV4 should go back on my second car list!

Without wishing to rain on anyone's car choice, the T180 engine was notoroious for serious defects. Toyoyta introduced a 7 year warranty and exchange engine scheme.BUT most are out of warranty now.

One got a nail in the middle of the tread and I went back to ATS. They told me they do not repair runflats under any circumstances.

Why do garages insist on spouting this nonsense. My Mini got a nail, dash warning came on, checked pressure, down from 32 to 22. Pumped up at nearest airline and visited the BMW dealer down the road who said it was illegal to repair runflats and would also make the warranty null and void. Took wheel to local indy tyre place (who I had used many times), he asked 1 simple question, had I actually run the tyre flat. I confirmed the tyre warning had illuminated and when checked it had 22 psi in it, with that he was happy to proceed. Nail was in centre of tread and simply repaired.

After he had done the repair and I had paid him the usual £5 I asked bout the "has it been run flat" question. He said that if a normal tyre has been run flat they can tell and will refuse to repair the tyre. With a runflat it can be difficult to tell and they need the owner to confirm yes or no. If the owner lies to get a repair carried out and the tyre fails its their problem, its on the T & C's on the invoice and a big notice on the wall.

Noted, but there are plenty of cars which may suffer engine failure - it's all part of the risks you way up when buying a car.

Pre 2007 Xtrails suffered engine failures caused by turbo failure, later ones suffer big end failures - I'd take a failing T180 head gasket any day - which I'd repair myself if the car was out of warranty.
