Car with similar performance of Citroen C3Airdream - Harish

I need some advice on buying a car for my daily commute. I have a Citroen C3 Airdream 1.6 Diesel that I was using for the last 3 years (20K miles every year) with an average mileage of 55-60MPG at speeds 70-90MPH. My daily journey is 50 miles + 50 miles (only on motorway and A roads) and I'm quite satisfied with my current car except manoeuvres. Now as my wife got her license I'm giving her my current car and planning to buy another car for my purpose. Basically I need a slightly bigger saloon car with the same performance as my current C3.

My requirements (in the order of preference)

1. Diesel - Manual

2. Good reliable car (as I dont know the internals of car much, if the car doesn't give me any trouble as long as I get it serviced at regular intervals then that is sufficient for me)

3. Less Maintenance costs

4. Good performance engine (at least 1.6 with 120BHP?)

5. Good infotainment (Bluetooth Phone and Music streaming), SatNav (7 digit postcode)

6. Cruise Control, parking sensors

7. Saloon car or Hatchback but not Estate car

I dont mind the car brand much so I am fine with new entry cars like Hyundai etc. My budget is around 15K (Cash payment, no loan/finance) and I am thinking of buying an used car (2-3 years old with mileage upto 25K).

Shortlisted cars so far:

1. BMW 320d efficient dynamics (But the insurance is coming around £850 even with 8 years no claim bonus, for all other cars below the insurance is around £220)

2. Ford Mondeo

3. Hyundai i40

4. Honda CIVIC

Any suggestions welcome.

I'd suggest going and test driving those 4, see what you think.

Regarding the BMW : be a little bit cautious. The 'official' service intervals for oil changes (roughly 18-20k) are not really enough, and can lead to engine/turbo/timing chain failures past 60-100k miles. If you do get one of those, make sure you get oil changes done every 10k or so. Also, I'm surprised the insurance quote for that is so steep. I've got a 2013 (new shape) 325d msport touring, and am only paying £230 a year (low - rural - crime area, and have 10+ yrs NCD).

Perfect question put there Harish, all the info anyone needs.

My only suggestion consider Kia Optima too, 7 year 100k mile warranty.

Out of your 4 choices i wouldn't choose number 1, reason being its previous extended service intervals leading to future long term reliability, others will disagree with that.

Gordon, as a BMW owner and driver I absolutely agree with that. I've said before, but I think it's the most stupid, willfully ignorant thing BMW have done in a long time (and I'll include the sealed-for-life autoboxes debacle in that). It's why mine gets an oil and filter change every 9-10k, rather than the 18k recommended.

I suspect most people who have at the very least an interest in, or enjoy their cars, do exactly the same as you and i, usually an annual service at 6 to 10k and if up to 20k annual mileage then a couple a year, company/lease and those who use and replace once warranty is up arn't in the least bothered, and there will always be the odd car that soldiers on for 200k miles with 4 oil changes in its entire life (the mainstay of 80's Japanese taxis, Nissan Bluebird anyone?), people like us are hedging our bets sensibly and its cheap betting IMO.

Only surprised at how eager some people are to buy certain makes, often with regular and common faults as the miles mount (turbos common under warranty), that have covered maybe around 100k miles and seen 4 services in that time, i'd be overtaking olympic sprinters ski daddling away from such cars.

Up to a point they'd have a vested interest in saying so, but when you speak to skilled make specialist indy garages, often ex dealer staff set up on their own and doing very well due to looking after cars better, they are scathing about these long service intervals and laugh out loud at sealed for life autobox syndrome.

For £15K you could buy a one year old KIA Optima (rebodied and slightly lower-spec Hyundai I40) from a dealer - which will still have six years of its original manufacturer's warranty left. Hunt down the mid-range "2 Tech" model which is very well equipped. Cheap to run (50+ mpg), quick enough (0-60 in 10 secs, 125 mph) and all the toys you'll ever need. (voice controlled bluetooth interface, touchscreen sat nav, reversing camera, heated seats.) there only one engine option the 1.7 CRDi.

Yes the BMW and Mondeo are better cars - but the KIA is by no means bad. The press slate the C3 compared to its rivals - but as you've found out, it's a perfectly good car. It's hard to find a genuinly poor car these days and the differences between 1 and 5 star rated cars are usually down to nit-picking. Drive one and see what you think. The Honda Accord feels a generation older than the best in the class as does the KIA - which doesn't make them bad despite what the press think! The i40 is too a slightly better car than the Optima but it will only have originally come with a 5 year warranty and will be older for the money.

Also don't overlook the Vauxhall Insignia - they are excellent cars - really good looking too but with wicked (typical Vauxhall) depreciation making your £15K go a long way - you'll easily find a one year old Insignia 2.0 CDTi with 10,000 miles on the clock for about £12.5K - I don't know why they depreciate so quickly because they are right up there dynamically with the best of the rest.

If you go for a Ford, consider a Focus if you don't need the extra room in a Mondeo, which is a big car. The 2.0 TDCI is a better performer than the 1.6 and almost as economical.

With that distance to commute, you need comfort, so consider a Volvo S40 or S60. I agree with the others - don't go for the BMW, not only because of the servicing issue, but they also hold their value and so your budget would run to an older car than the other makes you're considering.

The same goes for Audis and Mercedes, although you can get a similarly-powered Skoda or SEAT for less money than an Audi. I'm a little biased as I've had three of them in succession, but you could put the Octavia on your shortlist. After 2009 the common-rail diesel engine was fitted to Octavias, and the 2.0 is a good engine.

Now y'see Harish, a cynic might think, quite unreasonably of course, that you might have had one of those in mind awhile but thought, you might just say to your wife something about having researched it and sought advice on a car forum before rushing into the decision and that it was resultantly bought purely as a rational, considered and sensible personal transport solution.

Nice car by the way !

Well, this was not on my list initially. I have test driven some of the other vehciles but felt a Saloon would be too big for just myself since I'll be using mostly for office commute. So the obvious choice was to look for a Coupe with good mpg and I have reviewed Audi TT, VW Scirocco and Peugeot RCZ. Anyways overall I'm satisfied with the RCZ :)

If you are satisfied with your current car why not keep it and buy your wife another vehicle? Your wife will be starting without a no claims bonus so she will need to build that up so a low insurance rating is a consideration.
