My radio/ cd player on my 14 year old car has developed bad reception for AM stations but is fine on cd and FM....any ideas?

Assuming you mean a very bad crackle, hiss and general very poor quality reception?

Traditionally, this was cured by a condensor attached to the distributor (I think, but I last did this 31 years ago so cannot fully remember what I did).

Electric aerial?, is it extending fully? sometimes they get a bit cruded up (inside the coil as well as the posts) and one or more of the segments fails to open, eventually it will click past the toothed coil and not open at all.

A new one is expensive, but given a sunny day and a bit of time are easily stripped out so you can clean and regrease, good as new again.

It's a CLK and the aerial is fixed. Theres a CD changer in the boot which is very good but AM is full of interference.

Could be a problem with the aerial base amp which is needed foe am reception.i take it this is a cabrio?
