Alfa Romeo (2004) 156 1.9 diesel. - Diesel engine (Alfa Romeo 1.9) in 'limp mode' - GAZ9185

Car running perfectly, parked up at shop, on return engine started but refused to run above 1250 revs. It staggered back to the house emitting some smoke. Message on screen "go to dealer" but that's not easy when there's not a (reliable/competent) one within a reasonable distance.

Someone suggests it may be an open EGR valve, dirty MAF, or cracked turbo hose. Please can someone give me more information - and what I can do about the problem.

Also, where do I find the offending components under that all-covering black canopy......

Many thanks. Freddie. carrotsucker999@aol.com

These engines are a bit notorious for various problems - if you have a look at HJ's reviews sections, plenty of detail there. The engine was also used in the Vauxhall Vectra and Saab 9-3.

Unless you know what you're doing, I'd sugest you need a garage to get on it - as said, it's a common engine, so absolutely no need for a main agent, just a decent indie or (ideally) a diesel specialist. Once again, HJ has the good garage guide, and plenty of customer reviewed places also on places like goodgaragescheme.com - a local indie in my area is rated incredibly highly on there, and plenty of reviews generally too.

I would go with the diesel specialist suggestion, they usually know what they are doing and so are likely to be cheaper - not to mention quicker.
