Volkswagen Golf GTI - Are my running costs OK? - VR6
I purchased a V-reg VW Golf Gti 1.8T exactly 3 years ago for £2000.

Since purchase I've done:
28,000 miles
And spent:
£5260 on fuel
£2285 on Servicing (MOT, Service, Cambelt, Wipers, Repairs, Tyres x4,
£1481 on Expenses (Insurance &VED).

Just passed its MOT, with advisories:
56% Rolling Brake Efficiency nearly at fail limit
Wishbone bushes deteriorating
Front suspension movement at top

And as of a couple of days ago it crunches into second gear, other than that and the MOT its in very good shape mechanically and body wise.

All in its cost me 33p/mile

Well, no matter what you'd bought, the servicing /tyres costs, and the insurance/VED costs would have been roughly the same. The only way in which you would have saved money is with fuel - if you'd gone diesel. But then, the car would have been more expensive (probably), so any savings would have been lessened by that.

Unfortunately though, you're now at the point where you'll need to start looking at what it needs spending on it to keep it running, compared to sinking that money into something else. Do you run it for a year and then sell it with running out MOT, or get shot now with 12 months MOT.
