Had the driver of the car not been using a mobile but had cornflakes for breakfast would they say, "Don't eat cornflakes for breakfast"?

The real lesson, is don't pull out in front of traffic and don't drive/ride so fast you wouldn't be able to take evasive action. That is what will stop accidents not these 'blame and ban the inanimate object' tips.

I did use a phone while driving before they banned it and I didn't crash into anything. Americans seem to manage okay as well, but legislation's primary job is to drag society down to the lowest denominator.

Texters are a menace though. Almost got side swiped on the A12 by a VW Parts delivery driver (yes, you, if you're reading this) who was clearly texting at the time.

That said, there was a woman in a Golf today who had her McDonalds shake in one hand and chatting to her mate in the passenger seat. Dear god her road positioning was pathetic.

You seem to be missing the point, if it is suggested that making the obvious decisions which you recommend had been inhibited or retarded by using a mobile. I don't think one could claim that cornflakes for breakfast might cause that.

But I agree that issuing a 'ban', especially one which can't easily be enforced, may be a waste of time. The important message is that drivers remember that trying to do two or more things at once can be difficult.

Did you read about Volvo's self-driving 'autonomous' car? In theory we really might see people driving while eating cornflakes.... a terrible thought. Sounds like a cereal killer.

This morning, I was waiting at a junction to turn into a major road. I was well over onto my side of the road - nowhere near the white line.

A car tried to turn into the minor road and almost took my front wing off. The driver gave me a dirty look as if I was too far over. I then noticed he was driving and trying to turn with one hand; the other hand was out of the window with a cigarette attached.

Before they ban mobile phone use, ban smoking in cars. Easier to see and a damn sight more distractiing.

But it specifically says the pictures are from 2003, and that there is no evidence of mobile phone use?

Snopes.com is dedicated to debunking urban/internet myths. This one is a bit odd because the basic facts of collision and death seem proven.

The pictures are clearly of the result of a very serious collision and it seems undisputed that cause was driver pulling into path of a m/c which travelling at considerable speed.

The original account doesn't mention a mobile and there are differing versions in respect of riders speed, experience etc.

Nut/bolt question is are you likely to be more or less attentive and in full control of your vehicle with a phone clamped to your ear - never mind texting, browsing or faffing with its satnav function.

Totally agree that using a phone or texting while driving is a no no.

But that picture has been faked for effect. If three bodies "had" been in that space, the car would have been completely disassembled by emergency crews to get them out.

My opinion is that the bike was "fired" at the car with the door open or laid in a pose for the picture. Any bike hitting a car broadside would catapult the rider onto or over the car.

Did anybody see "Barely Legal Drivers" on BBC3 last night?

One candidate driving with a hidden camera was a 20? year old female, apparently, she had been in 3 crashes shortly she passed her test 2 years ago. When the hidden camera footage was shown to her mother and a driving expert, she was doing such things as reading texts and sending texts whie driving, dancing while friving with both her arms flailing around to the music. The best thing is, at the end pf the programme, she was upset that she had to take extra driving tuition and couldn't understand why she wasn't rewarded with a car.

Banning the use of hand-held mobiles while driving might not have stopped the dangerous practice, but it has reduced it a lot. Before the ban, a lot of drivers were using their mobiles for a lot of the time they were driving. So they were posing a greater risk to themselves and others for a significant part of their driving time.

When I used to commute 20 miles to work, I was often followed by vehicles whose driver was on the phone for several miles. So it's not like ligyhting a cigarette or getting out a polo mint, which only takes a few seconds.

I don't think it has reduced at all.

You might not see as many with it glued to their ears, even though you see it all the time, but from my driving position I can look in and see the phones in the palm either talking down to it, texting or reading texts. People have just found ways of avoiding being caught.

Yeah, I saw that too, for about ten minutes before I turned it off as it seemed to be more about that kid's life than driving.

Will the police be taking action with the recorded footage of her using her mobile while driving?
