Vauxhall Ampera - Worth a punt ? - mustangman

When I bought my VW Tiguan 18 months ago, I seriously considered the Vaux Ampera. I was looking for refined auto motoring with good economy, but was put off by the high cost.

However I find the VW DSG increasingly annoying at low speeds, it remains unpredictable and can jerk or be unresponsive right when you least expect it.

I have noted that Ampera prices have been revised downwards, and it would appear that a certain dealership group in the north midlands is discounting further. This brings the base Ampera in at around £23k. This looks like a more decent price, and could give me the smooth take off, refinement and high economy that I wish for. ( anyone know what its like at mway speeds ? )

Against would be 4 seat only, battery life and uncertain depreciation.

Any thoughts ?

For that sort of money, I'd be tempted to go for something like a BMW activehybrid 3 series saloon. 18 months old, specced out to hell and back, but with 11k miles, there's one on BMW AUC for £26.5k ... and I'd bet that would be negotiable too. HJ real mpg is reckoning 51mpg too, which isn't bad for a 3.0 litre petrol engine.

I saw a yellow Vauxhall Adam earlier.

The most ridiculous motor vehicle ever.

Except for the Peugeot 1007 obviously.

It's still a heck of a money to blow.

If I could find a demo/nearly new one for around £15k, maybe, just maybe.

An ampera for £23k sounds good to me. I guess the economics depend on your use. As the first few miles are electric only (most of the time) thats fine. Once thats run out you are on petrol power. I believe you will get high 30s, maybe low 40s at motorway speeds. If you rarely drive more than 50 miles before being able to recharge it will probably be very cheap to run. Being new you will get Vauxhalls Lifetime warranty too. Being cheap to run (one of a very small number of cars that get into the London congestion charge zone for free) its likely to keep its value reasonably well.

The reviews suggest its a very nice car to drive, with the electric motor being so quiet and smooth
