SEAT Alhambra 2005 1.9 TDI - OBD2 plug has power but not communicating. - DamianRobey
Hi. Need some help on this one.
I bought a code scanner to check for any faults before we travel across France.
The scanner gets power from the car but displays Link Error.
I've been to a garage and they have the same. Not communicating.
Fuses have been checked and the plug seems ok.
Everything on the Car works well.
What's the next step and can I ask where the wiring goes from the plug.
The garage said something about a can bus module.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanks. Damian

This is most likely because the protocol used by your car is not supported by this particular device.

Diesel cars of this age may not be Eobd compatible.can any other modules on the diagnostic network be accessed? There is no can bus module on these,it all runs through the instrument pod. What equipment is the garage using?

Hi thanks for your replies.
I have a proscan which is obd2,can,bus etc.
I understand the protocol could have been a problem.

When I took it to the garage the first one had a I think enos ?
Very smart with lots of connectors. That one was as mine. Link Problem.

The next is a seat specialist. His was an obd2 connector.
This one entered the system but could not read or communicate with anything.

Very interesting to read it all links up in the instrument pod.

Hi again. I'm sorry, I've just read the last comment.
No, whichever module we try to access the same problem occurs.
But it does give a list of available modules to access.

Ok,so we have a few options here. The diag equipt may be inadequate for the job.Try disconnecting the battery for 10 mins, this may re-boot the diagnostic system. If this still gives no comms, then we are looking at a possible wiring fault,or one of the access lines to a module is corrupt,as they all share the same diag wire link.Lastly, have you tried it with engine running?

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Yes the battery has been disconnected overnight.
All fuses have power and the obd plug has power etc.
I have had the diagnostic plugged in with the engine running and the same occurs.
When the modules share the same dialog do they go through a hub module or is it direct contact with each module from the obd plug ??
Would this be where the instrument pod comes to play.
That would also reduce the wiring fault search area !!
One other I could put to you is I haven't done this !! But there are forum people out there that suggest things like a piece of wire and bridging 2 terminals to reset. I believe some one tried something like this and damaged something in doing so.
Would you be able to recommend any tests before I book it in ??
Regards and thanks.

Firstly, under no circumstances bridge or short out any wiring in the obd socket.Serious damage can occur.I would check the wiring behind the obd socket ,to make sure the connections are intact and clean.Pin 7 is the important diag line.My feeling is that one of the electronic modules connected to the diagnostic line is causing the problem. However this takes time and knowledge to work through. If the car has electronic climate control, try disconnecting this first.

I will check pin 7 thanks and the plug wiring.
Then as you say the climate control which it does have.
If these reveal a non the wiser situation I'll play safe and get it to seat.
But will try.

An update !!!!
I had a flooded passenger foot well a month ago and the parking sensors had never really worked.
Just the odd noise.
When it was full of water there was a cracking noise.
I disconnected the module under the passenger seat (parking sensors)
And the obd port now works. !!!
Thanks again. I would never of checked any of this without the replies.
