Hello, I am 31 yo, would like to buy my first car and will be doing 8-10k annually. My budget is around 5k. I have found a 5 yo approved used Mazda 2 with 60k mileage on the clock. The insurance will come around £1600. If I increase my budget to 6k, I might buy a new suzuki alto or dacia sandero. Which one would be a better choice?

You don't say if a diesel. if it is don't! You will not get a warranty that is worth the paper it is written on.

what is your ncd claim history?

if you want new, dacia sanderos will be ok, cheapish to run, and you will have the benefit of the new warranty.

Me says go for sandero or alto.

I'm going to guess that the op has 0 ncb as they mentioned that they are buying their first car.

The 5 year old mazda if petrol would get my vote as it will lose far less money as it has already lost majority of its price and will probably have more in the way of creature comforts.

Many small cars only last 7 or 8 years before racking up servicing costs. A 5 year old car is higher risk too. A new car comes with a 3 year warranty. I'd go with the Alto, on the grounds that it will be more reliable.

However, £5700 will buy a low mileage 2 year old Skoda Citigo, a nice little car, still some warranty left in case of problems, from a main dealer too. See ebay. Cheap running costs, cheap to insure, nice looking, well built, practical, only four seats, nippy but no power.

Many thanks for your messages. The car is petrol and has just been serviced. This is coming from the main dealer again.

Hmmmm......I'm going to suggest another way. Don't spend anything like that sort of money. Spend up to £2k - ish on a nice older petrol Civic or Corolla, with a documented service history and an average or low mileage, maybe about 70 to 80K max- but not essential. Make sure it has a recent MOT and a nice set of matching tyres, check the car over with a knowledgable friend, you're looking for something clean, with signs of careful ownership. Plenty around. These cars are fairly bombproof, they are extremely reliable, they drive well, return decent mpg and cost very little to keep on the road. They are not cutting edge, trendy or fast but they will serve you for many years, with simple servicing at any half decent indie. And the money you save by doing this will be enough to build yourself a very satisfying stash to enjoy at your choice and leisure:-)

I agree with Bazza. Spending £5k on a small car that’s already 5 years old seems like poor value to me. (It’s not like spending £5k on a used VW Phaeton).

£2k to £3k will get you a perfectly adequately reliable smallish petrol car that would last many years yet, and not suffer as much depreciation.

You say you are ‘buying your first car’ – IF this also means you are an inexperienced driver, then equally you don’t want to be tying-up too much money in something that’s TOO shiny, because you’re likely to have one or two bumps or scrapes. My own (questionable) opinion is that you haven’t really ‘come-of-age’ as a driver until you’ve had a couple of small accidents, that help hone your craft the better for you to avoid any big ones! So it’s better for your first car to be something you can put a dent in and just leave it be, rather than fretting about having to rush to the bodyshop hospital to get it restored to perfection!

£5k will get you something 5 years old that's reasonable for a first time driver, including your insurance costs!

You might find the car you are looking for by putting some reg plates through insurance comparison sites; I find that, at 30 y/o with 6 years' driving that I can get surprisingly low insurance on larger cars that are 5 years old or so, eg Skoda Octavia, Mazda 6, VW Passat, BMW 6 series (was v surprised at that; lower than my MX-5)!

Not sure if this helps but this analysis (link below) indicates how long you can expect different car brands to last:

The sandero is a better choice than an alto, you cant reallty compare them as the Sandero has alot more space and a far bigger boot.

The problem with the £6 grand sandero is the kit.

the 1.2 engine is fine and is reliable, but the spec is bare, you dont even get central locking which will drive you insane.

If you go for a sandero, you really have to go for the mid spec trim called the ambience which comes to £6795.

Its an extra £795 quid but its well worth it. You get lots more kit, the car is alot more desirable to a 2nd hand buyer, it will be alot easier to live with and i think its the same insurance group.

I think the basic access model only makes sense on a Dacia if you want to use it as a commercial vehicle.

I can live without air con, cd player, elecy windows, bluetooth, alloys, leather, sat nav, extra safety features, metallic paint, etc - but I cant live without central locking.

Re-reading the original post, is it that the Mazda in question is priced at more like £3400 and the insurance is £1600, making-up the total budget of £5k?

In that case, the Mazda is priced more like I would expect. I'd still tend to spend less on a first car though, for the 'dents' reasons I mentioned before.

And are the Alto and Sandero available with free insurance, then?

Thanks again for all the messages. you have been very helpful. Mazda has a value of 4500, but it's sold now. After getting an insurance quote of £1600, I started to look at cars with insurance group 1-2. C1 and that segment is too low quality; VW up and that group is too expensive for its specs. And about insurances, I am getting a similar quote for a car with group 4A and a car with group 11. So, I started to think the insurance group wouldn't change the fact much, unfortunately. Would you agree on this?

The smallish cars that I can get for 2-3K would be Toyota Yaris with old looks probably. Central locking is a must, I agree. I wouldn't want to get anything bigger than that. So what else would you suggest?

I would like to buy in cash, so Alto and Sandero wouldn't be an option. And yes I might be considered as inexperienced, so I expect to have small scratches on the car.

Also do you have any suggestions of a reliable dealer around Maidenhead, Berkshire?

Thanks!

A little confusing - in your firay post you said your budget was £5k - now it's about half that.

I live in Berkshire - for which makes of car are you asking about dealers?

Hi Avant, I started to lower my budget due to the fact that my insurance is not going much lower and the advices that I received above. If you know any reliable dealer, that would be very useful! Thanks, Emel
