The "key" you get with a BMW is not quite a key is it. The things fits into a hole in the dash. It stores quite a bit of info. Service dept used to read it when you took the car in. I know because I owned one.

The OP asked about the key on a Corsa, bit different.

So its not an urban myth then?

Yes, as the original reply said, IT IS an urban myth.

Instead of putting up smart-alec comments about totally unrelated cars, it you'd had a look in one of the other sections you'd have seen that the OP asked the same question - but mentioned specifically that it was for a Corsa 'B'. Now, those stopped being made in 2000, when (I believe) even BMW were not using that sort of tech on their cars, unless in the 7 series. So to compare the 1993-2000 Corsa to the 1-series (introduced in 2004) is more than a little bit disingenuous.

Answer......yes.

If its an RFID key the rolling code changes each times its used. The ECU can be interegated and the time period between code changes can be extracted with specialist equipement, assuming of course the ECU and its internal battery is servicable. Of course on an older model such as the Corsa in question it doesnt give the exact time in a GMT style format but with some careful calculations you can get it to within an hour or so on a particular date.

So...........if the ECU indicates the owners key last changed its code 600 hours (about 2 weeks) ago, but the car was reported stolen 1200 hours (about 4 weeks) ago questions will be asked.

Sorry for being a smart ass but I really cant make it any simpler for you

Except that in one of the at least four other threads started on the same topic, the OP says it is a 2013 model. Was there ever an urban myth about the Corsa B?

Any further comments on this fascinating topic - please use the thread in Technical. One thread is enough (there were two more in Technical which I've closed).
