VW Polo - How slow is too slow? - groaver

David Ross on the site reviews the updated Polo and states that the 1 litre engine that replaces the old 1.2 is actually quicker.

Looking at its stats the 0-62mph is 15.5 seconds. yes I know that this is regarded as largely irrelevant by many these days and in the real world it is the time taken to accelerate in gear and how torquey the car is.

I still think that it must make it a pretty gutless car for anyone who isn't mainly town/city driving.

That is quick compared to my old Nissan Serena diesel.

Official Figures of 0 - 60 of 28.2 seconds.

Felt more like 50 seconds.

Gosh, I'd forgotten that one.

I hire that sack of carp on holiday. We were 7 up in it going around Lanzarote.

I swear the tide was coming in quicker!

Performance seems to be on a par with rival 1.0 non-turbo superminis, aside from the Corsa where the 1.0 EcoFlex takes over 18 seconds to 62mph.

I have driven the Serena diesel (non-turbo) and a 1.0 litre Polo, both about 15 years ago and both as rental cars.

The Polo was OK generally, its only failing was that with the air conditioning on, it was gutless up hills.

The Serena was simply gutless. No matter how hard one drive it it would not build up any speed at all. This is in contrst to a Doblo diesel (non-turbo) which got quicker during the holiday as I wrung its neck at high revs up hills. It was actually not unpleasant to drive by the end.

We had a couple of Nissan Serena's at work that replaced Bedford Rasals. The Rascal might (just) have been quicker but I know which I (and every one else for that matter) preferred to drive.

I was given a Polo as a courtesy car a couple of years ago, while my Golf was being serviced.

The Polo was a 3 cylinder 1.2L diesel and I found it very sluggish, I couldn't wait to get back in my TDi 140 Golf. One thing I found rather weird about the Polo was that when you put your foot down to accelerate not much happened, but when you lifted off it actually accelerated for several seconds - rather disconcerting when approaching a junction.

Several years ago when the wifes uncle decided he wanted a new car we were tasked with sorting it out (subject to him being happy after a test drive).

The simple criteria was cheap and 5 doors. His old car was a rusty 10 year old Corsa 1.2 3 door so not much dificulty finding a better car.

After driving many cars 3 stood out. The 1.0 Nissan Micra was way quicker that expected but was so basic it had to be kicked off the list. Sadly could not get a deal on a better spec 1.2, it might have been the car to buy. The Fiesta 1.2 was a cracker in all ways especially since the dealer was more than happy to do a great deal. The 1.2 Polo 3 cylinder thingy was a really nice car to sit in and look at with good spec and a great deal on offer but it was so slow it made you wonder if they had forgotten soemthing, like an engine.

On balance it was a close run thing but at the time the best car won, the Fiesta.

It's not that long ago 15.5s would have been average saloon car territory.

Without testing a well run in example it might be difficult to judge real performance on the road, but is the only test that counts. My guess is that it might need a gear dropped now and thn for overtake but that this car will be fine for normal use, even on the Motorway or hussled alongg on A roads.

My regular drive, for comparison, is 1.9D Berlingo. Laden, it's hauling nearly 2 tonnes with just under 70PS. It's fine on the motorway and only if planning an overtake on an A or B road do you need to remember it's limitations. It will cruise all day flat out at 80 but keeping it to 65 helps fuel consumption and is more relaxing.
