Moving to Cornwall.... - KB80

My partner's been offered a job just outside Truro and as it's almost too good to turn down so we're giving it serious thought.

We've been sent an information pack that had this in it http://www.millercountrywide.co.uk/forsaleoffice/Falmouth/1026 and I remember going on holiday to Falmouth when I was a kid but apart from that I don't know much more about the area.

Can anyone recommend any suitable, fairly cheap areas around Truro/Falmouth? Also, what is traffic like around there?

Depends on your definition of cheap, what post code do you currently live in?

I would imagine that Cornwall is similar to Dorset (where we're moving to in the summer): you pay extra to be near the coast. I would guess therefore that Truro would be cheaper thn Falmouth, but I don;t have specific local knowledge. Have a look on a site like Rightmove.com and get a feel for the price of what you want in different areas.

To add to the above, rightmove also lets you see actual sale prices for sold properties along with the details. No idea how to get it directly, I googled my own address to find the rightmove page.

I suggest you use Zoopla. A quick search for "Falmouth" gives properties ranging from £85,000 (one-bed flat) to £995,000 (five-bed house) in Falmouth itself. Over three pages of properties below £200,000.

Equivalent for "Truro" gives £68,000 to £895,000. Again, over three pages below £200,000.

I know the area well, but only as a visitor in spring and autumn - I have an aunt who lives in Falmouth. Traffic between Falmouth and Truro can be very bad and there are few alternative routes. In the height of the tourist season it must be a nightmare at times.

Unless you have a special reason to be in Falmouth I wouldn't move there. Also, although it has a kind of charm, being a busy port with some quaint corners, as a whole it's not very attractive, though there are a few nice bits.

Truro's status is higher - partly because it's a cathedral city, and it is more attractive as a town anyway. The shopping is better than in Falmouth. The main hospital for the area is there (though some do not rate it highly).

If your partner's work is just outside Truro I'd be looking to live near the job.
