Mx5 mk3 2.0 roadster - Engine failure after90k miles - Slim Chalkey
My mx5 has just suffered connecting rod failure. It's done 90k miles and is 7 years old. It has a full Mazda service history. It has never been on a track day or anything like that.

This seems an unusually catastrophic failure for a car of this age. I have no idea what my options are and also whether I should have any expectation of Mazda looking into this further.

Any advice on what my options are would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Unfortunately, I think this is one of those incidents that should simply be chalked up to experience.

Engine components can and do fail after extended usage. It's gutting when it happens but after 90K miles and 7 years I don't think you can have any expectation of a contribution from Mazda.

I'd get some quotes for a good used engine. It's unlikely to be worth having yours rebuilt as the damage from a broken rod is usually catastrophic.

Agreed, i daresay the block is holed, or if not then some serious battering inside it will have taken.

I'd have the head off and any other salvageable parts for useful spares before weighing the block in though.

To be fair you don't hear about much going wrong with Mazda petrols, bad luck.

Mazda petrols are usually bullet proof. Charles trent do engines for £150 but you have to remove yourself.

Worth putting another engine in.
