Does anyone have experience of run flat tyre insurance?
I have had three new tyres this year, two due to punctures. Tyres cost £205 each fitted.
BMW offer £300 per claim for 5 tyres over 3 years for £409. Cover 50 percent if tread is less than 6mm.

I have yet to hear anyone with a BMW and run flats say something good about them. All my contacts have had problems with them trashing tyres due to not knowing there was a puncture and/or ride quality. At the price they are I fail to see any advantage in them at all.

Well, HJ reckons they are a lifesaver - especially if you get a puncture on the drivers side on the motorway. I value my life quite highly, so on that basis the additional price is worth it.

Regarding not knowing if there is a puncture : all BMWs that have runflats have monitoring systems built in ... I believe BY LAW that they are required if RFTs are in use. The old type work by tyre revolutions (get a puncture, the car notices the tyre is turning more often, and alarms). The newer type are pressure monitors. I've had 3 or 4 punctures over the years with BMWs on run-flats, and the car has alerted me to the case every time, without fail. People that can ignore a red light and alarm bong on the dashboard ... well, they might not notice, I suppose. Then again, I've seen plenty of cars being driven over the years with absolutely flat 'normal' tyres, and the driver oblivious to the situation.

Regarding ride quality : yes, they were terrible a few years ago. However, the latest generation of RFTs are a lot better - and BMW seem to have also moved away from the insane rock-hard suspension that they were using.

This tyre lark is getting ludicrous, £200+ per tyre is bonkers unles its a 550 hp jobbie.

These run flats seem to puncture far too easily, i wouldn't insure i'd either get shot of the run flats or if thats not possible the car.

For £200+ per tyre, the OP is probably driving an M-sport with 19" rims. Not my idea of fun

That's cheap - the run flats on our 2012 X3 ( 245 45 18 from memory ) start at £250 each

Fortunately at 11000 miles from new we haven't had to change any

One of my criteria for any car is that I can buy tyres for around £50 to 60 each. It's a hidden cost that many people either miss or they don't really consider it a priority. Even some fairly mundane cars have ridiculous wheel/tyre combinations fitted, my neighbour has just spent £30K on an Audi estate with 20 inch rims, needs a new front tyre after kerbing it already and they're £200 upwards! As for run flats, can't they be changed to normal? The concept has never really worked. I'm not convinced they're a life saver, certainly marketed as such but statistally how many "moments" have you had with a sudden blow-out-- I've had one in 35 years and a million miles or so. Easily dealt with even though it was on the M6 at 70mph in an old banger.

I agree totally runflats are in my opinion at best an expensive folly, probably have more puncures due their weight .

Had run flats on my Mini Cooper S for 2 1/2 years, one puncture, local tyre place repaired it for a fiver.

Had runflats on my 1 Series for 5 1/2 years except for 15 months when winter tyres were fitted. In the 51 months the runflats were on the car I had no punctures, in the 15 months the winter tyres were on the car I had no punctures.

Would I buy runflats instead of normal tyres, not really. They weigh a ton and even though the ride quality has improved with each new development the ride quality still suffers noticably.

We were offered tyre insurance when we bought the 1 series. Could not see the point when I took into consideration how many punctures I had had over the years.

If you are getting 3 punctures in a few months I would suspect you are being targeted by some local comedians.

Run flats don't stop you getting punctures, all they do is allow you to drive for a limited distance on a flat tyre before changing it. But if you run it flat the tyre must be scrapped.

I find the cost is always greater when purchasing a tyre in a distress situation, I've just replaced two tyres and benefited from the saving of shopping around in a planned way. In the end my local tyre fitter supplied and fitted the tyres, but on a price match basis thus supporing local business too.

Last time I had a flat tyre (07.30 am whist setting out for work) I put the spare on then got the puncture repaired at the weekend - I saved the tyre by NOT driving on it at all.

Time before I had a slow puncture and noticed the different look of the tyre, immediately pumped it up and then soon visited the garage for repair. No need for a run flat (but tyre pressure monitoring software would have been nice).

I have never considered run flat tyres, think the approach of not supplying spares to be a problem and the prospect of a tyre shredding on the motorway without a spare (especially the motorways without hard shoulders) thus being parked roadside to be a worry.
