Charged for exhaust I didn't ask for - boz1449
Took my to a local garage as it was due for mot, I had a quick look noticed the brake pipes looked a bit corroded so pointed that out to them said I was in no hurry , two day later got a phone call saying it had passed but had to put a new exhaust as it had failed. I was fuming as the bill came to nearly £400. They said they tried once to contact me but I had no missed calls, they had to replace it as it fell off on the way to the test. Can anyone tell me where I stand as I cannot afford to pay the bill?

Regards

Grant

Did you ask them to fix anything that needed doing, or did they say that they would no the necessary? Always be clear that nobody should do anything without asking you.

Go to europarts.co.uk and you will see that is for a complete system and a bit for fitting.

you will have to pay the bill and sue in the small claims court and very quickly ask for the old bits, the catalyst is worth a few bob as scrap/

If they have done work without authorisation, then you are entitled to get them to un-do that work. That would involve them removing the new exhaust, and either refitting your old one, OR, if it cannot be refitted, giving it back to you.

Just ask them to have a look and to let me know, they were very apologetic but they said they had no choice as the old one fell off!

Lets look at this from another angle, The garage obviously had to make a call and went with what they thought was the most realistic option.

Alternatively you could always ask them to take the new pipe off, put the old one back on, leave the car where it was when it fell off and let you sort out your own MOT!

Ask for a breakdown of the costs, that will go someway in identifying if they have overcharged you.

You say you cant afford to pay the bill, this begs the question what would have happened if they had managed to contact you prior to replacing the pipe?

Many years ago an unforeseen problem was found when I had my car serviced at a small independent garage - when I called for the car and was told how much it would cost to fix I must have visibly gone pale; the proprietor kindly suggested i could become an 'account ' customer and pay the bill at the end of the month (and my payday!).

Worth a try, they can only say no.
