Hyundai IX 35 1.7 CRDI 2011 - excess wear rear brake pads - pedrogonzalez

I have covered less than 10000 ten thousand miles from new. Just had service and been advised that rear brak pads are 90% worn but front are only 50% worn. ,--Never towed anything so why has this happened, surely the fronts should wear out before ther rear and surely not this much at this mileage. Warranty Claim??

Stabilty system doing its job, applying the brakes independanetly to keep the car on an even keel.

You're not alone in this, and you don't need to be driving it like you stole it either.

One of our flock here experimented with turning the ESP or whatever it is Mystic Meg uses for a month on his car (you might find the thread if you have a poke nose, Audi S4/6 i think), lo and behold the excessive brake dust gathering on his rear wheels didn't whilst the thing was turned off, and nicer to drive to boot apparently.

Modern cars and their electronics, bless 'em and all those who sail in 'em.

If you regularly wash your car wheels and then park the car without driving it , the rear disks will rust from the water left on them. Then when you do drive away, the rust wears the pads.

Worse on cars with alloy wheels where the disks are exposed.

A well known problem on cossetted low mileage cars.

I'd virtually always attribute excessive brake disc/pad wear to infrequent use rather than excessive use. The front axle takes the brunt of heavy braking, and if the ESP was frequently braking, you'd notice it in your economy.

Wife's Aygo needed new front disks and pads after 15,000 miles - lack of use over 5 years lead to their demise.

Worse on cars with alloy wheels where the disks are exposed.

When I bought my Forester, the brake discs were in a terrible state, the pedal would pulse when brakes were applied. Now all replaced.

It has a very open design of alloy wheel, and can show corrosion quickly because the rain covers the discs straight away when parked. Leave the car to stand for any length of time and they could easily corrode to the point of being less effective.

Give me a set of black steels any day.

Your brake pads are not worn. Its just the garage trying it on.

Or

They mean the rears still have 90% left and the frints 50% left.

Take it to another garage and get them to inspect and report.
