Could the differential in the gearbox be gone

I'd look to see if I'd pulled the shaft out of the diff when hammering off the outer CV.

Not to be too picky, but hammering things into place can be a very bad idea.

Only do potentially expensive jobs when sure of competencies.

If the splines on the shaft haven't matched up to splines in the "the hole" properly then maybe something further in has moved, diff bearing? and that is going to cost a whole lot more. last drive shafts i did took about half an hour a side. How much is that from an indie?

And finally were they oem parts or cheapies from e-bay?

I assumed the OP had to hammer the CV off the drive shaft, whilst leaving the drive shaft in situ, something I've done many times. You do need to be careful not to pull the shaft out of the diff.

I was wondering if the shaft had slipped out of the diff and on re-assembling the CV and hub if it pushed it far enough back for the splines to be grinding against the grooves on the sun gears.

I'm with Tom, hammering the CV joint is opften the only way you can remove them as they are held on by a snap ring, I also think the shaft has probably pulled out of the diff, feel it to see if there is any in-out movement, if its loose you can tap it in with a hammer and drift of some kind, a piece of wood would,be best.
