Please can we remove these radio code requests. They simply encourage thefts of radios by making it easy to install in other vehicles.

If we have to have them, can they go in Technical?

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Avant

I've been wondering about these: why are they almost always for Fords?

Galaxy - you're kind enough to answer most of them: do you have any comments?

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Collos25

I have commented before that a number of these must be stolen you can buy a cd on fleabay with all the codes on but surely it should not be made easy for them by just replying to any request.

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - jc2

Not just move to "technical" but give them a section of their own-I suggested that ages ago!I was also wondering if every request was genuine or were some for radios with an unknown history.

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Galaxy

I myself have always given radio codes to Forum Members in good faith. I wish to make that perfectly clear.

I suppose it's possible that some of them may-well be for stolen radios, but I have no way of knowing whether requests are from genuine sources or not. I would hope that all requests are, indeed, genuine.

These are not now state-of-the-art radios. I remember when I bought my first Mondeo, a replacement 6000 was going to cost about £300 if I had to replace it. Now they are about £30 on Ebay; quite honestly, they're hardly worth stealing for that!

If Forum Members think I should stop giving out codes then I'm quite happy to stop; it is a lot of work! The code generator which I and other HJ Forum Members use to generate codes from serial numbers is freely available on the internet; that's where I originally obtained it from when another FM posted the link.

Codes are readily available from advertisers on Ebay, anyway, or from Ford Main Dealers.

Without wanting to get uppity about it - I think you should. These requests clog up the main board with several almost idential threads, and they are not a 'discussion' merely requests.

But isn't that what we do here, helping other people?

Although I can see it could be assisting theft.

I'll get a crease in my RRRRRRs from sitting on this fence!

As a contributor to the radio decode posts,I really cannot see this as a major security/theft risk. When was the last time anyone had a factory fitted Ford radio stolen from their car?Does anyone really want a radio cassette unit from a 14 year old Fiesta? We can only do codes for cars up to 2006.Most up to date radio systems are coded to the car via the electronic network,so even if you have the correct code,it will not work in another vehicle.I would be more worried about the theft of catalytic converters and dpf systems. Now we are talking serious money to replace these.,upwards of £1000 in most cases.

I think if Galaxy is happy to psot the codes then he should continue to do so.

It's a great servive to people and something that should be commended.

As Galaxy mentioned these radios are not expenive items now and unlikley to have been stolen as there is no money in them. More likely older used cars when the battery has been disconnected and the code required. Although I didn't get help here I needed a code on my old Corsas radio - I needed as the car never came with the code and I didn't want to pay a fortune to a Vauxhall dealer for a radio not worth much.

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - jc2

I do not think they should be handed out for free-perhaps a contrbution to a charity?? After all, some small businesses are being deprived of legitimate income.

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - alan1302

When someone comes on here and asks how to fix their car without taking it to a garage you are also depriving someone of a legitimite income. I see this as exactly the same.

But at least they may buy parts from a dealer or breaker.

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Robin the Technician

Keep doing a good job Galaxy!!! This forum is about helping others - and that's exactly what you are doing. no one knows if a radio is stolen or not - and the police are not that interested in radio theft any longer - it does not generate revenue like speeding fines etc. If the requester does not get the code from here, he/she can buy it form any number of code providers on t'internet.

Keep this facility I say......

These are the views of Robin the Technician - I fix, therefore I am

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Avant

For now I'll just move these requests over to Technical. I suppose some of them may be for stolen units, but most are probable from DIYers who hav disconnected the battery for one reason or another.

Galaxy and Elekiedoctor - entirely up to you. Your help is appreciated but don't feel you have to.

(Edit - just moved several of them over. Every one a Ford - I still can't think why.)

I am quite happy to help any Ford owners with code requests, provided a new thread is started for each radio and not tagged onto an existing one.I think that most are Fords because these are the easiest to access by most garages/workshops,usually for free.I am able to get codes for most other makes, but usually involves a phone call and a fee,so not really suitable for a forum like this.

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Bolt

Who would want to nick a ford radio?,but seriously you can get codes from other forums anyway so stopping it here wont matter.

Plus the software is available online anyway free of charge

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - daveyK_UK

if you paid a scrap yard £30 for a GM cd30 and it didnt come with the code so you couldnt check it was working properly,

why would you buy it?

You take it back, some rather pointless comments when you consider the ford codes can be got hold of free without coming on this forum, had some complained of V codes being given out (I know you cannot get them free Yet) I could then see the point, but its a bit late IMO

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Collos25

These radios are quite cheap in the UK although scroats still steal them for their next fix, they are still worth a lot of money in eastern block countries and are stolen by gangs operating in the west along with other items and shipped back,I have noticed one of the requests for codes has been made with a German,French or Eastern block computer and to my mind is very suspect.these computers have extra lettters on them such as Ö Ü Ä ..

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Bolt

I dont doubt for one minute they get nicked, but it is harder for them to do that now,but it still doesnt stop them downloading the freely available software to get the code themselves,

I think the only reason they ask here is because they havent a clue how to use/download the software and most forums have some kind contributers who gladly give them what they want.

It`s also impossible to know who is genuine and who isnt?

Whatever next?

(Edit - comment deleted as it was (justifiably) complained about.)

Please remove references to diesel technology as I am vegetarian.

Its not very funny when they break into your car and steal the radio causing untold damage. They are not stealing 1 or 2 in certain areas its quite an epidemic I know there are many ways to get the codes but I for one would not sleep at night if I thought I had helped these low life.

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Ben 10

I've had several Fords in the past and had to request the codes, legit, from Ford, who charge for the service.

I would have relished someone providing the code "buckshee" but I hadn't discovered HJ back then. We are on here to help each other, not run a motoring business to make money.

I say carry on with the help. And if the likes of Ford want to stop the practice, then provide owners the codes for FREE. Then we'll know it's the "bent " ones coming on here. Until then add away.

Radio Code Requests - Dodgy? - Bolt

If they smash dash to get them out they must be stupid scroats/vandals,its quicker to use correct tool.

And ford radios are useless worthless units M series anyway, but then I dont like Fords
