Kia Sorento XE (2005) - Automatic gearbox issues - GrumpyOldGit

At 130,000 miles the automatic gearbox intermittently fails to select 5th. When this happens the LCD display for gear selected in manual (tiptronic) mode remains blank when it should light up and display the gear selected.

Intermittently fails to select 1st so pulling away is like a manual with clutch slip - too many revs.

When stopping it often 'clonks' into 1st.

Intermittently delays selecting reverse for 10 to 15 seconds after moving the gear selector lever, then 'clonks' in.

All of these faults are cleared by stopping and restarting the car.

I've paid a gearbox specialist £1,800 to have the box reconditioned. All the faults were reported to him at handover but he has failed to resolve any of them. The car is back with him for the third time, 19 days in all so far. He says that he has spent many hours trying to find a fault but cannot. Any suggestions on the fault, or on getting a refund, would be welcome.

You have paid a specialist 1800pounds are you sure he knows what he is doing, for that amount of money you could by a recondioned box and have it fitted by a real specialist .

This is a well-known company that is even listed on this site as a good garage. If you can suggest a company that can fit a reconditioned gearbox for £1,800, please do. Of course it also has to be close to home, so Berkshire or South Oxfordshire. Thanks for your input but I am asking for suggestions about the faults, rather than a critique of my choice of repairer.
