Toyota main dealer servicing costs seem high for doing very little: three levels of service are offered, at a price of £149, £219 and 279 all at 10k intervals. Here is the catch on closer examination spark plugs are changed at 60K interval and air filter at 40k.

They do offer a 5 year 100k waranty, but the service charges are excessive for what seems to be no more than a oil change plus check and prod!!

I know man deers are expensive but this seem over the top.

Kind regards and thanks for any comments

Try a rav4, they want £349 for a glorified oil change just because of its age. They list a lot of 'checks' which basically mean do the minimum they can get away with!

a fifty pounds MOT is better value at least the steering and supension are properly checked

These glass palaces cost money to build and to run and all the other services offered such as a coffee machine all cost money perhaps a more simple approach is needed but we put to great a value of main dealer service record.

Toyota servicing, on the major services, usually every other year, include a full brake strip clean and lube, i know they do the work too, not just charge for it, well the dealer i used certainly did all work thoroughly.

From threads here about brake problems it would seem other makes don't bother with brake maintenance other than disc and pad changes.

The pricey service on the Rav4 probably includes gear oil changes, Toyota major services often include gear oil renewals on the 4x4's, none of this sealed for life or 100k whichever comes first.

Whilst its fair to say the minor service will most likely be an oil change (is 0W-20 expensive) and inspection, i wonder if hybrids get put on the diagnostics and allow the computers to talk to each other whilst the mechanic is doing the oil and inspection.

Nope - any gear oil changes are extra!

The cruze year 1 service is £90+vat labour +oil and filter, about the same, next service a bit less than toyota but the 3rd year was about the same for the epica.

if out of warranty consider a good indie.

remember though toyota are supposed to be good in dealing with problems, that is what you pay for!

Can independant garages service hybrids? I wonder if there are any specialist procedures needed on them.... anybody have experience of this? I ask as I can see me going down the hybrid route at some future point, at leasst for the main A to B primary barge.

£150ish is about the norm for a minor service at a main dealer. My local independent charges about £120.

I paid £160 for my last minor service on the B class, but Mercedes extend the roadside assistance for another year if you have a dealer service.

I didn't however take them up on their advised brake replacement. Front discs and pads, rear pads - £520. With rear discs it would have been close to £700!

Both of my petrol Auris (2009 model and my current 2012 model) have been substantially cheaper to service at the main dealer than either of our second cars - our previous Mazda 2 and our current Hyundai i20.

If you are out of warranty and on a tight budget then I can see the point of going to a good independent IF they are cheaper.

However if you have a car still under warranty, whether bought new or nearly new, that cost you between £10k and £30k why would you risk not paying a relatively small amount more for an official service whatever the manufacturer is.

I would as soon sleep with a cobra than entrust a hybid to some mechanics. The hamfisted are likely to screw something up... despite the simplicity of servicing.

"I know man deers are expensive...." (OP, above)

Clearly trying to make a fast buck. :)
