2007 Audi A4 turbo 2.0 automatic - loud ticking sound on Audi A4 - jamhan68

For the past 6 months, my audi a4 has been ticking and rattling. I've taken it to two different repair shops and neither of them can figure out where it's coming from. They both tell me to turn up the radio if it bothers me which is not acceptable. The noise is getting louder. I currently have 70,000 miles on it and don't drive it much lately because the rattling bothers me so much. Can anyone tell me what could be causing this issue? There are some days when it doesn't do it at all and other days that it's consistent until I reach about 40mph and then it stops. Its definately worse in stop and go traffic. Any clues out there?

Answers to these questions would help narrow down the possibilities:

Is the car petrol or diesel?

Does it make the noise when the engine is idling at rest, gearbox in neutral?

Does the frequency of the ticking / rattling increase (get faster) if you gently raise the revs to 2000rpm from idle, gearbox in neutral and the car at rest with handbrake on?

Does it make the noise when you start the engine first time in the morning (i.e. when the engine is stone cold)?

Is it better or worse when the engine is fully warmed up?

Or is the noise related to road speed?

I have just brought a Audi A4 Avant 2.0L TDi S Line Multitronic. When it is in gear .. Drive or Reverse it starts to make a ticking noise.. still drives fine.. yet extremely annoying! Any ideas?

Balance shaft module/ oil pump drive?

If it is it could eventually write the engine off if not sorted
