This one has me puzzled. Every car I have owned with discs all round has put more dust on the front alloys than the rears. Most cars I see seem to be the same. I have had this A3 for nearly four years and more dust comes off the rear alloys than the front whenever I wash it. Any ideas?

Modern cars with EBD use the rear brakes more around town and before coming to a stop to increase refinement and reduce nose-dive.

I suppose with gentle braking this might work, but otherwise I don't see how any system can prevent a car's weight being thrown forward, requiring more effort on the fronts if the rears are not to lock up and skid? Are the discs or pads made of different stuff?

I've seen several reports now of seemingly faster rear brake wear (usually RWD) from various makes, i suspect the cars are driven quite vigorously and the aforesaid stability conrtol whatever its called is applying the brakes as necessary to maintain composure.

The car on occaison is driven vigorously but usually sedately. As an example, for the last few weeks the car has only done my usual steady 8 mile commute to work and every Sunday I see the same result. I didn't mention that it is a Quattro as I didn't see any point. Fom the history it is on original discs and pads and has just turned 70K miles. That should show that it is not treated harshly.Cheers.

Paul it might be an interesting experiment to turn the stability and/or traction control off, if you can, for a week and see if the brake dust is still the same.

I know nothing about Quattro but i wonder if the back brakes are larger than the normal car, where most car's rear pads are half or less the area of the fronts, maybe that yours is Quattro could be something to do with what you are seeing.

Wonder also if it could be how the car's brakes are cooled, maybe the fronts are designed for passing air to blow through them for cooling, scattering the dust away from the wheels maybe a useful side effect?, the rears due to where they are might not have this designed in cooling.

Only surmising here, haven't the foggiest really, interesting to find out why though.

You are right GB. Turned the ESP off for the last 3 weeks and the front wheels were dirtier than the backs. Considering the steady driving it appears that my ESP seems to me to be over sensitive. When tried with a bit of spirited driving the car now does what I want it to-not the othe way round. That is, power out before being perfectly straight and power off turn in when I want it. Much better. Best Regards.

Well thats interesting, but how nice that someone out there actually enjoys being in control of their own car and can feel the difference their input makes.

Thanks for the update.
