Although my driving and mileage is not suited to diesel a local, reputable garage has a 2010 Ford Focus 2.0 titanium auto with a genuine 5,000 miles on the clock. Does this mean that engine etc is roughly equivalent to a 6 months old car or does the lack of use indicate there may be trouble ahead ! Every Ford Focus I've seen appears to have sports suspension as standard. Is this the case and how is comfort affected ? A comfortable ride is a high priority.

A 3+ year old car with automatic transmission and only 5,000 miles is probably a Motability car - and may well have only done very short journeys.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful reply. I'm not knowledgeable about cars - so does 3 years of probably short journeys means the engine is likely to develop a few ( possibly expensive ) faults ? I wonder if with the majority of my journeys being fairly short and very rare motorway I should stick with a previous decision to only consider petrol ?

The problems such as blocked DPF will not in my experience appear until around 70k miles if you like the car and the price to you is accepatable then buy it.

Thanks Collos : price is £300 lower than Parkers guide with mileage adjustment. I'll go for a test drive next week. A test drive cannot be the same as having a car for a while. Anybody able to comment on comfort ( I appreciate its personal preference ) ? thanks

You can ask if it is ex motability, is it from a ford main dealer, ask specifically if they will cover those items of possible concern under warranty, but if YOUR mileage will be low ONLY buy a petrol car. As others on here say there are plenty around.

Thanks. My usual annual mileage is 8,000 very rarely on motorway. Most drives less than 30 miles. Once a month a 120 miles each way - dual carriageway. Seems like petrol is what I should buy. Still have a test drive to get feel of Focus. Comments on its comfort and automatic transmission from drivers with personal experience appreciated.

You're right to go for petrol given your annual mileage, but bear in mind that a 2.0 litre automatic won't be very economical. Generally the Focus is popular and good to drive - better to drive than a Vauxhall Astra and cheper than a VW Golf of similar age / mileage.

Seat comfort is too subjective for anyone to judge except you yourself, so try this Focus on as long a test drive as you can reasonably get. There are lots of them around, so walk away if you have any doubts. If any problems happen as a result of the previousowner's low mileage, they will probably arise in the first year - so make sure you get a warranty and read its terms and conditions carefully.

Thanks Avant, much appreciated. I hadn't really considered the economics of 2.0 litres ! The speed, quantity and quality of advice given has been marvellous. Amazing the help received within a few hours on a Sunday. I now feel confident about what to do next. Repeated thanks to all.

The replies have increased my knowledge when going to buy a car. All of the good things I've read about the Focus I agreed with on my test drive. Unfortunately, I found the seats uncomfortable and no way was it a good buy for me. I think my preference is for a Volvo, but they have very few petrol automatics. Without wanting to start a new thread can anyone suggest anything similar. Priorities comfort, safety and good handling. My personal preference is for cars no bigger than Focus.

It was recently suggested (by avant i think) that i am a man in need of a volvo, but can't find any petrol manuals either.

ORB

actually looking at a mondeo as my neighbour has 2 as taxis.

price kit equation. mpg manual acceptable.

autotrader will throw up a few and the petrols seem to have few vices, but buy as young as you can!

Try any of the following and see if the seats suit you:

VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, SEAT Leon, Mazda 3. I doublt if you'd find a Vauxhall Astra comfortable but you never know - we're all different shapes and sizes.

I'd have added the Toyota Auris but I think the alternatve to a manual is a semi-automatic: these are jerky and horrrible, and of use only to someone with no left foot who likes a manual gearbox.

Thanks again for such valuable suggestions. Now its a case of balancing possible deals along with everything else - not least what my wife prefers. Very pleased I posted for advice.

Latest Auris has seen the MMT automated manual box from hell dumped and the new CVT box, if its as good as Avensis, will be the business.

It seems to be that with most makes if you want comfort you are going to have to buy a lower spec, nearly all makers increase the size of the wheels to silly proportions to please the peculiarly British fetish for bling wheels and elastic band tyres and apparent sporty handling (which is anything but because a hard sprung car hops around our third world pot hole strewn roads shaking your fillings loose), and to please the majority of road testers who don't have to live day in day out with a car shod in concrete springs and tyres.

Our leader, HJ, stands almost alone among his peers in speaking common sense against this practice and often suggests a lower spec with sensible tyres might be advisable.

Thanks. I hadn't realised that tyre size would make a difference. There seems to be varying views about CVT. Is there a difference in standard between manufacturers ? If there is which to beware of ? and which to consider ? obviously Toyota have got it right.

The Toyota CVT, and the related Subaru CVT, seem very good to drive - unlike some of the others.
