Volkswagen Golf 2.0TDi - Petrol in diesel Golf - Galad

A colleague filled his Golf's TDi tank with petrol yesterday and drove off before the engine cut out. He got the tank drained and a new fuel filter installed but how much damage could he have done (he says it's driving okay) and when is this likely to manifest itself? Car is a 2007 2.0TDi with £80k on the clock.

As it is a 2007 it should be the PD engine and NOT Common Rail so should be OK

Did that with a hire Renault Clio when I was last back in the UK. Realised just after I'd done it, and before I'd started the engine.

Moral Dilemma

Moral dilemma resolved by deciding they could probably afford it, though I spent a while looking for 2-stroke oil to spike the tank with. Couldn'y find any. Probably just as well.

Seemed to run OK for the next few hundred miles, though it was only about 4 gallons of petrol, and they seemed to spend a lot of time poking around the dash when I brought it back, so maybe it was showing a fault light.

Did the reverse with my Sunny just before leaving for Taiwan. Fortunately it turned out to have a drain plug in the petrol tank.

And people say there's nothing wrong with an ex renter, no different to any other used car, proof if any were needed.

I spent a fair amount of time in my previous work at the very busy runway side sites at H'row etc, always a selection of cars put to one side waiting for the misfuelling van, and no i am not confusing these with the lines of cars being de-bowsed before de-fleet.
