SEAT Alhambra - Long life servicing - switch to fixed intervals? - Nutkey

Just bought an 11-month old Alhambra, with 7.5K on the clock, currently on long-life servicing. Diesel 2.0/140 engine.

Should I give it an oil change immediately and move onto fixed servicing intervals, or let it run in for a bit more? We won't be doing many miles over the next few months, as we do the bulk of our mileage in summer.

Change to 12 mth / 10-12K servicing- whichever is the sooner - a bit more expensive but regular servicing saves cash in the long run.........IMHO

There is actually very little difference in cost between long life and fixed interval servicing, the major saving is down time for high mileage users.

If you are doing less than 10,000 miles a year you should be on fixed intervals, that is how my Seat is set.

When I bought mine I bought the VAG service plan (not the rip off dealer one). £10.90 a month for 34 months. Very reasonable compared to many brands

Maybe see how much the difference between the two service regimes will cost, then factor in a half way point oil change with the long life routine (you could quietly DIY this and keep parts receipts for a later private sale) and then decide which is best for you.

Agree with FB, good servicing is the key to a long trouble free life.

And yes, i would DIY an oil change immediately if you are going long life.

Interesting Skidpans referral to the VAG service plan, why is that 34 months?, why not 36 months and 3 full services...presumably 3 annual anyway.

Its quite simple. The VAG plan is for 3 annual services but there are only 34 payments, no idea why.

Over 3 years the VAG plan will cost me £370 approx. At todays prices the same 3 services bought individually would cost me £507 so quite a saving about £137. The only thing that annoys me is the fact that you could have the first 4 services on a plan, slightly more expensive per month but since the 4th service is an expensive one (£259) it would have been worth considering.

Forget the manufacturer's recommended service intervals which is nothing but sales pitch, and use your own common sense. If you seriously want to look after your engine you'll change the oil far more frequently than at 30,000 miles or two years.

Totally depends on your millage and how long your going to keep your car. When I did 50K per year I changed the oil every 10K. The long service option would have reduced the turbo/engines life.
I use the train now and only do 6K per year so changing the oil every 2 years makes sense for me as 10 years use is only 60K miles.

Doesn't work like that. When I bought my new Leon it was available with either fixed or long life servicing. I only do about 8000 miles a year thus long life (approx 20,000 or 2 years) might appear to make sense but VAG clarly state that if you do under 10,000 miles a year its fixed service intervals. On investigation there was no cost saving with long life (with the service plan I bought it would have actually been more expensive) so its annual services for me.
