Lots on the news at present about elephant poaching and the huge profits made from the illegal trade in ivory.

Some time ago a news item showed several tons of confiscated ivory being incinerated. Is there a case for selling such hoards instead? This ought to depress the price and make poaching less profitable, the sale proceeds could fund more game rangers (and longer sentences for those convicted).

Getting stupid. Now suggested that people with legal (over 100 year old) ivory should destroy it. Being suggested for the Buck House and Royal collection too. No point, the objects are beautiful and made by crastsmen. Grinding them up isn't going to bring the elephants back to life so what is the point?

Possibly to make it clear that ivory must no longer have any market value. But to be effective this needs to be world-wide, and that will be more difficult to achieve.

If that is the case, this needs to be on a wide-spread scale and in all countries, which seems impossible...the fox-hunting debate springs to mind here.
