I had a write off, car taken to scrap yard. Letter from insurance (Admiral) advised they do not offer buy back of write off's as company policy is the car will be scrapped.

I have since received a letter from a company in Birmingham asking for the 2nd key of my old car, as they have bought it from Copart (Admiral's declared 'scrapper'). Therefore the car has obviously not been scrapped and the car is intended to be sold as a road worthy vehicle (otherwise why would you want the extra key?).

Is this legal? Or have Admiral fulfilled their arrangement by giving it to a 'scrapper', who has since sold it on? I assume Copart will have either paid a half decent some for it or Admiral will receive a commision for of the sale price? Seems to blantantly contradict the correspondance they have sent me and worries me that someone could end up with my old motor unaware it had a pretty heavy smash on the motorway and was written off.

AFAIK Copart auction damaged etc vehicles. While some go to be parted out and scrapped I suspect others go into the repairable market.

In your shoes I'd be making enquiries through Admiral as to what Category of write off it was and seeking their comments on its apparent re-mergence.

I sent my repairable Xantia to Copart last September. Never heard anything more of it.

Handed over two keys but could not find third. It subequently turned up in an inner pocket of my work bag. Threw it away then but I do still have the key code card suplied when the car was new along with folder re its history should it end up in hands of an enthusiast.
