Hi

My wifes Honda Jazz Auto has recently started making a loud noise, on idle it's fine and we've had the exhaust checked. When driving it sounds just like the exhaust is blowing (i.e. but racer type exhaust note).

As the exhaust is OK does anyone have any ideas what this might be? it also seems a bit thirsty but she only makes short trips so that copuld be the issue there....

Thanks in advance.

Did the exhaust check include the exhaust manifold? A blow from that can be very noisy.

Try blocking the tailpipe with engine at idle-it should stall. If not you've got a leak.

Possible one of the baffles in one of the silencers has come loose.

Difficult to confirm without removing the silencer(s) and giving it a good shaking, even then it might be jammed in place now and replacing the only real test.

Presumably you've stuck your head down by the exhaust manifold whilst an assistant blips the throttle to check that.

Less likely, Cat disintegrated, should be diagnosed properly by someone competent.

Another possible, is the exhaust touching body/subframe when engine under power (weak exahust/gearbox/engine mounting) leading to increased vibration?

Thanks for the replies all. We had the exhaust checked at a local specialist, they said it was perfect - in actual fact the car is VERY quiet when idling, it just gets noisy once it's moving. No lack of power either so I think the exhaust may be ared herring.

The noise is a low grumble, much like you get with a small exhaust blow. I've checked the oil and all seems ok there, no warning lights and everything seems to be driving ok etc. It's all a bit odd!

Does the sound change on overrun, stuck her in neutral and let her coast, sound still there?

Wheel bearing failure - known fault.

Check.

Second this (wheel bearing).....easy to check - 50mph put into neutral and let the engine revs die to idle. If you can hear the noise, then rear bearing is likely suspect.

Easy DiY fix, but bearing is not replaceable, so its a complete assembly from Honda dealer at cost of £178! (PLUS fitting if you can't DiY)

...and another thing that might be worth checking is the idler pulley on the auxiliary belt. Lump of wood/ear near to the spot on the engine should allow you to hear if its grumbling.

The bearing on this IS replaceable (the complete pulley assembly is ~£90; the bearing <£10).

As you might guess, both of these have needed replacing fairly recently on my wife's Jazz!

Good luck.
