Toyota Avensis - using jump star on flat battery - Ksquared

I consider buying a 'JUMPSTAR(TM)' emergency car battery booster. I have heard that some cars with advance sat nav and/or anti-theft devices may not be compatible. Is there any such known difficulty?

Never heard of it and can't find it on the seach engine, what is it a proper jump pack or an ebay type toy to connect two fag lighters together?

It was advertised on amazon see the link below:

It appears to plug in the lighter socket so must be low wattage - by jump-start standards.

If its what i'm seeing, in my humble opinion its a toy.

For jump starting purposes, either buy a jump pack,

or a set of quality copper cored jump leads of adequate length, and learn the correct method of connecting to avoid sparking and possible damage to either car...my mate expensively fried his digital dash (Renault so to be expected) when he jump started a friends car.

Note, always always leave the drivers door open or keep the keys out of the car when you connect jump leads to a flat battery, some cars, notably some Fords but others can do this, will lock the whole car down as soon as you connect the jump leads.

I had read somwhere, arelative long time ago, that it would in all likehood fry the electronics if the engine was jump started without precautions. I think at the time it was recommended that one switch on the headlights before connecting the jump leads or try to jump start. Any comments, anyone ?

My son had to leave his Touran parked up while he was in hospital and found that the battery was flat when he came to start the engine. ( The glove locker had a courtesy light in there that had drained the battery). I connected my ancient battery charger - no more than 4 amps whatever the conditions - and left it connected for half a day. The engine started without any trouble.

Jump start/booster packs are fine on the majority of cars provided the correct procedure is adopted. It is always a good idea to try and get the earth lead (negative)connected to the engine ,rather than the earth terminal at the battery. Also it is important to leave the jump pack connected while the engine runs for a few minutes.Sometimes damage can be done when the pack is disconnected,as this can cause a major surge in power as the alternator takes over high load.Btw,leaving the glove box open on a Touran (and a lot of other cars)will not drain the battery,as the power to the light shuts off automatically after approx 20 mins.hth
