Hyundai i30 diesel vs Seat Leon 1.2 TSI - Ian71
Hello,

We are shortlisting cars at the moment and I would apprecaite views/experiences of the Hyundai i30 diesel and Seat leon 1.2 TSI. We're looking at either a nearly new i30 or a new Seat. The car will do a small number of very short trips during the week, but will get at least a couple of long-ish journeys each week, so I am thinking that this would be OK for the DPF etc on the diesel. The car will also be used to do long cross-country trips too on a monthly basis, so I want something that will also be a good relaxing long distance car.

The car we buy would be kept for a long period (current car 9 years!) so long term reliability is a concern - which would be better? Both engines have been around for a while and I don't seem to be able to find any real horror stories about either. The short journeys issue is swaying me towards the Seat (and the 0%, deposit contribution and free tech pack), but the Hyundai would be around £3k cheaper for a 6-9 month old.

I'm finding it quite difficult to split them - Seat feels new and modern, while the Hyundai feels a little bigger and for want of a better word - comfy.

I would really appreciate your views!

Thanking you in advance....

Think I can help you with this. We have a Kia Ceed CRDi which is, as you probably know is a Hyundai i30 with different body. OK, its an estate and its just over 3 years old but its still relevant. We also have a 6 month old Seat Leon 1.4 TSi.

Both are great cars and have their plus points.

The Kia is more economical and is probably a bit better for space.

The Seat is way quieter and the TSI engine is really responsive but very economical for a petrol. The interior materials are better in the Seat as well and I think the Seat has a better ride but is not by much.

With your use the DPF on the Hyundia would not be an issue, ours does a regen every 250 to 300 miles.

Both are good choices, I would have either again without hesitation.

As Skidpan says, it'a a choice between two good cars: I assume that for whatever reason you don't want a petrol Hyundai. You're choosing between space and comfort (Hyundai) and something a bit livelier to drive (SEAT).

The Hyundai has a longer warranty, but it doesn't cost much to extend the SEAT's. I think that what would sway it for me would be that you can afford the SEAT new: you can then run it in yourself without the risk that a previous owner either sold it prematurely because it gave problems, or drove it like the clappers - or both. It could also have been a hire car.

If you find the Hyundai suits you better, there may be some good deals on a new one which could bring it down to costing little or no more than the SEAT.

Thank you Avant and Skidpan - very helpful.

I had steered away from the petrol i30 becasue the 1.4 petrol does not have the torque of the 1.2 TSI, and the car weights a good 150kg more. I'm expecting that it could be a bit tiring on longer journeys, particularly if loaded up, and need lots of gear changes. Does anybody have any experience of the current i30 1.4?

I will be arranging test drives over the next few days, but it would be good to hear experiences of either car or indeed more widely with the 1.2 TSI VAG engine in other cars. It does not seem to have any particular issues - unless I've missed them competely (which is entirely possible...)
