A VW 1.4 frequently stalled when slowing at road junctions etc.
This was due to a THROTLE HOUSING defect.
The throttle housing was changed out for a reconditioned one and all was OK.
After being setup by a VW mechanic (not at VW garage), the engine was allowed to 'settle down' for about a week. During this week the engine tends to run at higher idling speeds than should be. A few days after the repair, the engine settled to correct idling speed.

CARB version, on a P ? I don't think so ! Surely this is a single-point injection system.

I agree that is why the garage mentioned Throttle Body also strange because I though that the tick over on that model was controlled by a stepper motor mounted on the Throttle Body. Peter
