VW Golf Estate 2.0 tdi 2009 - EGR - AndyVW

My four year, 3 month old Golf estate has just needed a complete EGR system replacement, ie cooler, valve pipes and gaskets. The system had becone completely clogged. Parts alone were over £700 and the labour £650. The car has 46.5k miles on the clock and has been regularly serviced at a main dealer. In August 2012 there was a fault with the DPF regeneration, which was fixed under warranty. Otherwise, nothing else to report. The car is regularly used on motorway/main road runs and infrequently for short, or traffic snarled hops. I have been in discussion with VW Cutomer Care, who admit that this fault usually occurs at mileages around the 100k mark, so my car is unusual. They have agreed to pay for the parts as a goodwill gesture, but will not contribute to the labour costs. I feel that this fault should not have occurred on a car of this 'vintage' and am considering taking things further to recover more of the cost. I dont consider this to be reasonable wear and tear.

Parts paid for on a fault occuring out of warranty is about as good as you are going to get, IMO.

I agree with AS above, but I also agree that this should not happen on a car which sounds well maintained and is not used for frequent short journeys.

I don't think you will get much out of the dealer or VW without any outside help. In your position I would contact What Car? or Auto Express on their consumer issues page and hope one of them may take up your case. Good luck.

I have a 2009 Golf 2.0 tdi 140 and have similar problems. I've been told it needs a complete EGR system replacement and turbo system replacement. I also had a problem with DPF a while back which was fixed under warrenty. All services done by the dealers. They have quoted me £2500 for all the works. As a goodwill gesture they have offered to pay for the EGR valve (I think) which is about £180 and a 10% discount off the final bill.

I have read on other forums that this is a common problem on this engine range but they don't want to admit to it. Don't see how spending so much on a 4 year old car can be justified.

A five year old car develops a mechanical fault its hardly news or unusual, its all part of having an economical low soot engine.
