Estates - Used 5/6 yr oldA4 estate, V70 or 3 series touring? - SMARK

Hi, having now given up on any dealer finding me a 2 year old petrol on demand 4x4 i've decided to look at older estates and have narrowed it down to an A4 estate, V70 or 3 series estate.

I'm looking at 5-6 yr old cars with up to 65,000 miles and full service history. Almost ceratinly main dealer with a warranty.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice of their own preferences or experiences of these cars at the same mileage/age and any pitfalls of each model from a personal perspective.

Reasons for petrol are very low mileage 4-6k per year and for estates i have two dogs. I also don't mind big engines due to low mileage.

Any help would be appreciated.

Slightly off topic, but im told the new Insignia estate with 4x4 (think its called the country tourer?) is meant to be very good.

Is this using an updated version of the old Cavalier Turbo 4wd that was notoriously unreliable or have they used a Haldex system this time ?

A 5-6 year old car with 50k + miles is not main dealer material.Have you considered a Focus or mondeo petrol estate ?Loads of space for dogs and other bits.3 series touring is very small in the luggage area.

I know Vauxhalls depreciate at the rate of knots, but I doubt that the Insignia Country Tourer, introduced this year, will be within the range of someone looking for a 5-6-year-old car!

SMark - the V70 is much bigger than the other two on your list, and probably more suited to your needs unless the dogs are very small. You could alternatively look at a Passat or Octavia with the same mechanicals as an A4 but roomier and newer for the same budget.

Or go Japanese and look at the Mazda 6, Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord estates. Provided you stick to petrol you should get good value for money.

Plus of course the Mondeo as already suggested. A good car with lots to choose from.

Thanks for the replies.

The cars are all main dealer cars with 12 month unlimited mileage warranties, save for the usual wear and tear itmes. All three marques cover cars up to 7 yrs old and under 100k with main dealer fsh.

I cannot find a mondeo petrol estate for love nor money within my budget and i am not a risk taker so it excludes the private purchase unless i knew the person and the car.

The mazda estate looked brilliant with bags of boot room until i got in it an touched something, all very flimsy plastic.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a cheap car any longer and so i normally extend a warranty beyond the 1st year for peace of mind motoring. My budget us up to £12,500.

MPG is not relevant for me given the very low miles i do. Might well take a look at the Toyota though as hadn't considered it really.

My thoughts on the audi and bmw are that it must stay within warranty due to the horrendous repair costs associated with the brands if anything goes wrong and alsoto a lesser extent with the volvo.

I suppose what i am after is personal experiences of known issues with these three brands.

An Avensis Estate with the residual 5 year manufacturers warranty is within your budget, if it has been serviced within the Toyota dealership and is an approved car the warranty can be extended too. Don't go for the diesel though.

If you're up for something with a little "hoof" and a little more entertaining to drive, have a look at a Saab 9-3 2.0T Aero in Wagon form.

I've had a 2007 Aero saloon with a Maptun tune for almost 3 years now. It's very comfy and quiet. Goes like stink and handles & brakes well. A friend who drives a Scooby STi describes it as "an intruiging mix of performance and comfort". If you do get one, change to Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2s when it needs new tyres (non XL version). Much more comfort and quieter than the Contis with only a slight loss of steering and handling precision.

Thanks for the advice.

No aventis estates available on the main dealer site unfortunately.

I'm assuming that as Saab have sadly dispappeared that there are no main dealer options for purchase.

there's plenty of Saab specialists about. And plenty of cars at non specialist outlets. If you try one and it's not for you, fair enough, but don't miss out because of preconceptions. Mine's an absolute hoot to drive and doubles as family transport admirably. Right now I wouldn't swap it for anything else (that's affordable), such is the grin it puts on my face !!

Any recommendations for south east particularly east sussex/kent for specialist saab dealers?

There 8 pages of them at £10,000 plus on Autotrader most of them are at Toyota main dealers. Don't rely on the official Toyota site to search for them.

I can only speak for the Volvo, really excellent car. Mine's on 160k and the only issue has been a couple of injectors two years ago, it's 10 years old and economical.

Kill two birds with one stone - how about a Jag X-type - AWD and an estate, though not exactly the largest estate car on the market!.

Looked at the jaguar website and saw a couple of cars, but read on this website that the awd causes uneven wear on front tyres. Trouble is that there is no info on how common the problem is.

Surely if the car has decent history with it you should be able to go though the documentation to ascertain tyre wear?

You are probably right and i only do about 4-6k miles pa. and the problem seems to be tryes around 10,000 miles.

I must admit i do like the volvo. I had a V50 a few years ago. Very good car and comfortable.

There is a V70 one available about 20 miles away but it has had three owners, the first being a rental co, it has done 40k, 2.5T auto 4 yrs old. If it wasn't for the rental aspect i'd take a look.
