Reversing Camera - julie page

I am looking for a reversing camera to give as a Christmas present for a 07 Vectra, been looking on ebay mostly and confused as to what should I buy.

How does the monitor that seems to stick on your rear view mirror work, do you need two cameras one for pointing rear and one down for reversing

How hard is it to fit?

Any advice appreciated please

It might be best to visit a car audio accessories specialist ( not Halfords)

Reversing Camera - oldroverboy.

Buy the one that is a "number plate surround", it has a wide angle lens, wires in from circuit at rear of car, try to buy from uk supplier in case of problems, and unless it is wireless will need to wire througt to dashboard and fix somewhere. some manufacturers fit on new cars, but mabe expensive as a present.

I have had two cars with cameras as original equipment. One, on an Avensis, was very deceptive and made you think you were much further away from objects partly to the side than you actually were. You thought you were feet clear when actually it was inches. Current car, a Civic, has a grid overlaid on the image and this gives a much more accurate impression. So if you can try and get a model that offers an overlay. However I have also had cars with simple reverse sensors and actually I prefer those. You quickly get used to the way the beeps indicate the distance of objects and for me it's the much preferable system as it also means you can concentrate on your mirrors at the same time. Also there is no lens to smear up in the rain.

My Honda has beepers and a camera. Both work OK but when the roads are dirty the camera is useless.

It may a factor of age but I prefer using the wing mirrors and experience to the new fangled technology. That said, the beepers saw a very low wall with sharp edges that the no 1 eyeball missed when reversing into a parking space last week.

I was in Canterbury last night with some friends (women) - when I backed into a bay in the car park they both commented on the reversing camera - loved it very much.

The image is always crystal clear, and gives a good representation of what is behind, and how far to the brick wall. The only time I have a problem is when it is dark, the car has only one reversing light and this is not sufficient light - so I have to use the fog lamp to illiminate the way (ban single reversing lights). Nissan take note (yes, the new note has only one reversing light). Car is a Primera by the way. If my next car does hot have a reversing camera I'll look to the aftermarket.
